Blight designation might
qualify township for grant

Areas of Clark and South Pymatuning Township affected by the Nov. 10 tornado have yet to see any federal or state disaster relief money, but a designation by South Pymatuning supervisors may qualify the township for some grant money.

Tuesday, supervisors declared the Wynwood Acres area of the township as a redevelopment area to qualify it for Community Development Block Grant money.

To qualify for CDBG money, a neighborhood must either have 50 percent of its residents at low-income status or be classified as a slum or blight area. The tornado created a blight area, said Mike Nashtock, chairman of the supervisors.

The tornado destroyed or damaged homes in the area of state Route 18, Wynwood Drive and Thomason and Valley View roads in the township and at Milton and Nora streets and state Route 258 in Clark.

Clark Mayor Doug Bradley has applied for two state Department of Community and Economic Development grants -- one for $30,000 and the other for $100,000 -- to cover tornado-related expenses in the borough. He said he expects to hear about the status of the grants by the end of this month.
