Mercer senior apartments to go fast, board says

While completion of new apartments in Mercer for senior citizens is still 90 days away, Mercer County Housing Authority expects the 10 units to fill up quickly.

Just how quickly they fill up likely will determine whether they will be joined by 10 more.

Occupancy manager Holly Nogay said more than 50 inquiries have come in about the apartments.

"I think we're going to have a quick lease up in this community," said Executive Director L. DeWitt Boosel.

The authority's staff will undergo training Wednesday to learn the occupancy rules of the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency, which put up more than $700,000 of the $900,000 construction cost.

Although the apartments will be available to senior citizens with low and moderate incomes, they are not considered public housing and are subject to PHFA rules, not federal public housing rules.

The authority will not be able to begin occupancy proceedings until after the training.

"If we lease up fast enough, if we can prove there's a need, we can build another 10 units on that same site," Boosel said.

PHFA would be asked to put up the money for 10 more apartments.

Trek Development of Pittsburgh is project developer, and the authority will manage the apartments.
