Neighbors describe
apparent
shooting

A man was injured in an apparent shooting Friday evening at 497 Davis St. in Sharon.

Mercer County 911 said the shooting was called in at 5:06 p.m.

While police released no details of the shooting, neighbors said the man appeared to have a neck wound and walked under his own power to an ambulance.

Ann Putnam, who lives next door at 489 Davis, said she heard a bang.

"We thought something fell in the house," she said.

While another neighbor suspected the sound was a gunshot, a third said the noise sounded like a Dumpster closing.

Mrs. Putnam's husband, an avid hunter, said he was surprised to learn the noise was a gunshot.

"It sounded like an awfully big gun, a .357 or a .44 Magnum," he said.

Putnam said he looked outside after the bang and saw a man getting into a van parked on Lafayette.

The van was light-colored and had a sliding door on the driver's side.

"I seen him getting in. I didn't see where he came from," Putnam said. "That guy didn't seem to be in a hurry. He probably figured he had plenty of time."

A man who was in a yard on Lafayette at the time of the bang reported seeing something similar.

He said he saw a man in a hooded winter coat with his head down and his arms close to his body get into a silver Dodge Caravan, probably from the years 1995 to 1998.

"He went at a normal pace, like he was in no big hurry," said the man, who asked not to be named. "I knew something was up from the way he was holding himself."

The van went north on Lafayette, he said.

Neighbors said the victim and a woman recently moved into the house.

Mrs. Putnam said the neighborhood has been quiet since she has lived there.

"We moved in in 1973 and we've never had a bit of trouble here," she said.

"This is a quiet neighborhood," said Mary Nelson, the Putnams' daughter, who lives elsewhere in Sharon. "This doesn't happen here."

She said mostly elderly people live in the neighborhood.

"Most of the people who live here lived here when I was growing up," Ms. Nelson said.
