Auction nets $17,000 for the Wengerds

More than $17,000 was raised at an auction Friday to benefit the family of Rudy and Lizzie Wengerd of New Wilmington.

Loomco International, Transfer, held the auction and another one last Tuesday at Mercer Livestock Auction, Coolspring Township, that collected more than $7,000.

"We're taking everything down to them today," Rod Loomis, president of Loomco, said Monday.

Donations still are coming in and will be passed on to the family, Loomis said.

Friday's auction was held at Hermitage Volunteer Fire Department's Station One, and Loomis thanked the department for donating the space, the Winner family and their businesses for supporting the effort, and all who donated items and came to the auction.

More than 600 people turned out for the benefit.

"It was an outstanding sale," Loomis said.

Five of the Wengerds' nine children died in a house fire Dec. 3.
