Imagine a Lennon show?
Tribute band member does

Bill Kropinak hasn't exactly left the Beatles tribute business behind.

In his new show, the Pulaski man who played John Lennon in the band Abbey Road and Hard Day's Night is playing plenty of Beatles tunes.

But "Come Together" focuses on Lennon's music both as a Beatle and a solo performer.

Kropinak will perform "Come Together: A Tribute to John Lennon" Dec. 31 at Corinthian Banquet Hall and Event Center, Sharon.

"I felt the need to do something different," said Kropinak, who left Hard Day's Night to develop the show. "The Beatles tribute business has been thriving since the '60s, and over those 30 years it has become stale. I needed to do something new."

The show features several costume changes and depicts Lennon with the Beatles on "The Ed Sullivan Show," and during the "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and "Abbey Road" days, and as he moved onto solo protest music such as "Give Peace A Chance" and "Power to the People," and then the tunes he performed in the mid-'70s.

"I talk to the people and take them through the era and the costumes that he wore," Kropinak, 54, said.

Like with the Beatles tribute bands, Kropinak tries to appear as authentic as possible, from the design of the costumes to the equipment the Beatles used. Audience members should be able to imagine that Lennon is among them.

"We try to sound Beatle-like through the Beatle years and we try to sound Lennonish when we get into the solo era of Lennon," he said.

Kropinak is backed by Abbey Road alums Mark and Brenda Pringle -- he plays guitar and sings and she plays keyboards and percussion and sings -- and drummer Keith Rosser, and new bassist Danny Tharp.

The Corinthian is at 47 Vine Ave. Doors open at 7 p.m. and dinner will be served an hour later, although show-only tickets also will be sold. Lee Alverson, an Elton John impersonator, will open the show. Tickets: (724) 983-9020.
