Music club wins two awards from federation

The Lakeview Area Music Club received two awards from the Pennsylvania Federation of Music Clubs during the annual Northwest Regional meeting recently, according to club President Lynne Hamilton.

One was for their observance of National Music Week in May when the group entertained residents at the Lakeview Manor in Stoneboro and provided them with refreshments after the program. The other award was for the design and presentation of the club's annual program book.

Members and guests attended their annual Christmas party at the Stoneboro United Methodist Church earlier this month and were treated to a program of seasonal piano and flute selections by Lakeview High School juniors Leah Furey and Jennifer Montgomery. Mrs. Hamilton joined Miss Montgomery in a flute duet during one of the selections.

Nancy Everall and Edith Myers acted as hostesses and led the group in singing the hymn of the month, "While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks." The next meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. April 14 at the Stoneboro United Methodist Church. The Lakeview High School Show Choir will perform.

A panel of judges is touring the borough checking out the Christmas light displays to chose a winner for the town's annual Christmas home lighting contest.

They started their tour on Wednesday and will continue through Christmas Day, to evaluate and pick the first-, second- and third-place winners to be announced in January, according to Jane Troy, chair of the Christmas Magic Committee and a member of borough council. No preregistratioin was required, Troy said, if a home has an outdoor display it will be considered for a prize. Previous winners are exempt from prizes, she said, but may receive an honorable mention. The prizes, U.S. Savings Bonds, were donated by Mercer County State Bank, Troy said.

The Emmanuel Christian Church, 4499 Greenville/Sandy Lake Road, will present a Christmas program at 7 p.m. Sunday at the church.

"The Road to Bethlehem -- Just the Beginning," is a musical drama by Dennis and Nan Allen, orchestrated by Richard Kingsmore. The free program is open to the public. The church is also hosting the "Holiday Heroes" American Red Cross blood drive from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday.

Neighborhood columnist Lauri Galentine writes about the Lakeview area.
