Witnesses lead cops
to robbery suspect
Quick thinking by two Greenville residents lead to the arrest of a man suspected of armed robbery Saturday night.
Police said two people passing by the Kwik Fill Red Apple gas station around 11 p.m. saw a suspicious looking man leave the convenience store and get in a car. They took down his license plate number and watched where he went, and reported it to police.
The store had just been robbed. Police said a man used a .357 Magnum revolver to hold up a worker at the gas station on Main Street. Around $200 was taken from the cash register, police said.
Charles P. Axe, 49, of 6 Penn Ave., Greenville, was arrested at his apartment a few minutes later.
Police obtained a warrant and searched Axe's apartment and car. Evidence linking Axe to the robbery was found, police said.
Axe was charged with robbery, making terroristic threats, theft and receiving stolen property.
It was the second armed robbery in the Greenville area in a week. A West Salem Township man was arrested Dec. 16 for robbing an employee and patron of the Greenville Elks Club at gun point that night. The suspect, Donald Slater, 21, of 234 N. Maysville Road, was apprehended a few moments later after a foot chase.
