Ambulance taking injured from crash slams into pickup

An ambulance carrying an injured man away from the scene of a two-car crash Saturday afternoon on Scrubgrass Road in Findley Township was hit on the same road by a pickup truck.

The original crash occurred at 4:27 p.m. when Miriam J. Ventura, 51, Pittsburgh, was driving east and her car drifted into the westbound lanes and collided head-on with a car driven by Thomas R. Eddy, 29, of Boyers, police said.

Seven people, three of them children, were injured in the wreck.

The most seriously injured, Adeline Ventura, 7, McKees Rocks, was in critical but stable condition Sunday at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. She was taken there by helicopter after the crash.

Ms. Ventura and two of the passengers in her car, Miranda Ventura, 9, Pittsburgh and Sarah Vennell, 4, McKees Rocks, were treated at United Community Hospital, Pine Township. None of the children were wearing seat belts, police said.

Eddy was eventually taken by helicopter to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, where he was listed in fair condition. Two passengers in his car, Johnnie B. Byler, 24, Emlenton, and Donald Snow, 46, of 1628 Pulaski-Mercer Road, Mercer, were treated at United Community Hospital. All three men were wearing their seat belts, police said.

Both vehicles were severely damaged and were towed from the scene, police said.

While Eddy was being taken by ambulance to United Community Hospital for transfer to Pittsburgh the second crash occured. At 5;20 p.m., police said the ambulance, with lights and sirens on, attempted to pass a pickup truck driven by Donald Miller, 1619 Scrubgrass Road. Miller's truck had slowed down to almost a stop, police said.

As the ambulance was passing his truck, Miller attempted to make a left turn into his driveway and collided with the ambulance.

Miller, ambulance driver Marcus L. McElwain, of 67 Holmes Road, Mercer, and an ambulance employee, Bambi Ebel, 219 Franklin St., Mercer, were treated at United Community Hospital for minor injuries. Eddy didn't suffer any further injuries in the second crash, police said.
