Main line break creates river, leaves crater in street

Water pressure all over Greenville could have been affected by a main line break Thursday, according to the Greenville Municipal Authority.

The first call on the break came in at about noon, said Maria Kerekes, office manager.

"Just a typical winter event," she said of the 12-inch ductile iron line, which she called one of the biggest main lines in town.

The lines are susceptible to the freeze-and-thaw cycle, she said, adding she wasn't sure how old the line is.

The break was in Bracken Alley, off North High Street, and created "a river down West Main hill," Ms. Kerekes said.

Work crews isolated the line by shutting off water service to it, which also restored water pressure to the rest of town.

Some residents, even on the east side of the borough, saw their showers produce only a trickle, while others reported no change in pressure.

Water service was restored by about 1:15 p.m., Ms. Kerekes said.

Ms. Kerekes had no estimate of when the work would be complete. "They'll stick with it until it's done," she said.

The break left a 20-foot crater from water rushing out, she said.

The break also diverted work crews from a followup repair to a smaller line.

About two weeks ago, a 2-inch line broke at Plum Street and Third Avenue. Crews fixed the line and hoped a valve would reseal itself, but that has not happened, she said.

The valve will be replaced, which could be done as early as today, she said.
