A 21-year-old Grove City man died early Monday in a fire at his home at 635 S. Center St., police said.
Jason Glatt was killed in the fire, which broke out sometime before 2:30 a.m.
Theresa Donahey, Glatt's mother, was also in the house. She was initially taken to United Community Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and later transferred to Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh, police said.
She was in serious condition Monday evening, a hospital spokesperson said.
Grove City police were dispatched to the residence, which contained two apartments, at 2:37 a.m.
Kirk McClure, captain of Grove City Volunteer Fire Department, said it took three hours to bring the fire under control.
Departments from Pine Township, Springfield Township, Harrisville and Mercer assisted, as well as Grove City Area Rescue Squad.
McClure said Glatt died in the front, second-floor apartment. He added that it did not appear that the apartments were equipped with smoke detectors.
A woman and her 5-year-old daughter, who occupied the first-floor apartment, escaped unharmed.
Police said damage to the second and third floors of the dwelling was extensive.
A state fire marshal has been called in to try to determine the cause of the blaze.
