Gun tosser is sentenced to up to 5 years

A Youngstown man who fled from police and tossed a gun out the window of his car was sentenced Friday to 19 months to 5 years in state prison.

Adrian S. O'Connor, 25, was arrested Sept. 27 in Hermitage on warrants from Ohio authorities.

O'Connor was wanted on two fugitive warrants, one from Youngstown police for felonious assault with a gun, and a second from Ohio authorities for violating parole on a separate felonious assault conviction.

Mahoning County Violent Crimes Task Force contacted Hermitage police and said O'Connor might visit a state Route 18 motel, police said. Police from both agencies staked out the motel and O'Connor showed up, but fled in a waiting car that went south on Route 18 before he could be arrested, police said.

During the chase, he threw a loaded 9 mm pistol out the car window, police said. The pistol was reported stolen in Youngstown, police said.

On Nov. 5, O'Connor pleaded guilty to a firearms violation. Charges of receiving stolen property were dropped.

Public defender Dana Flick represented O'Connor at the sentencing, which was presided over by Mercer County Common Pleas Judge Thomas R. Dobson.

Flick said his client "wished he never had gone to Pennsylvania," and the fact that he was forthcoming and admitted to his crimes throughout the court proceedings spoke on his behalf.

O'Connor apologized to the court, asking Dobson to keep in mind he was facing serious charges in Ohio for felonious assault.

Dobson said he was concerned about O'Connor's record and sentenced him to prison. Issues surrounding O'Connor's extradition to Ohio would be dealt with later, Dobson said.
