Parking illegally will hurt wallet

Fines could be
as high as $100

§   §   §

Sharon Police Chief Thomas Burke wants to give motorists in the city a "fair warning" that police are going to be cracking down on people who park their vehicles illegally.

If a policeman sees someone parked illegally they can issue tickets at their discretion, Burke said. He said he wants people to be aware that if they disobey parking signs, they will face fines.

And those fines have gone up -- dramatically.

A parking ticket used to cost between $2 and $15. Now anyone parked in a no parking zone will be fined $25 and anyone parked in a fire lane will be fined $50. Those fines double if they are not paid within 72 hours, Burke said.

He said police will issue arrest warrants for people who don't pay their parking fines.

The old, minimal fines didn't deter people from parking illegally, Burke said.

In the near future police will begin to use timing devices to catch speeders, particularly in school zones, Burke said.
