Joining weather siren system widens emergency alert area

The Nov. 10 tornado changed the landscape of Clark and South Pymatuning Township.

Tuesday, Clark council made a change that hopefully will give residents better warning of future storms.

Council joined the borough's emergency weather warning system with Hermitage's.

Hermitage City Manager Gary Hinkson proposed the idea in a letter to Clark Mayor Doug Bradley.

Bradley told council he "strongly recommended" approving the joint venture.

Hermitage has four weather sirens at various locations that can be activated from the Mercer County 911 center, from the Hermitage fire station on Highland Road or remotely from fire vehicles assigned to the fire chief and deputy chief.

Adding Clark's siren to the Hermitage system would guarantee the siren would go off in an emergency and would also benefit Hermitage because residents of the northeast area of the city would be able to hear Clark's siren, Hinkson's letter said.

"This is a great opportunity for us. It benefits not only us but Hermitage," Bradley said.

He was quick to point out, however, that he thought the Clark volunteer fire department did an excellent job the night of the tornado. Clark's weather siren did not go off that night due to power failure, and the borough is in the process of obtaining a backup generator.
