Auto arsonist active in city, cops say

Arson fires damaged four cars Thursday morning in Farrell, and an attempt was made to ignite two others, police said.

"We think its the same person" responsible for the fires, said Southwest Mercer County Regional Police Chief Riley Smoot Jr.

Authorities were called to the first fire 12:44 a.m. in the 300 block of Roemer Boulevard, across Roemer from Hardesty's Towing. One car was ablaze and a second nearby was damaged by the flames, police said.

At 2:58 a.m., authorities were called to the 700 block of Roemer, across the street from Hogue's Towing, where one car was ablaze, a second nearby was damaged by the flames, and police found evidence that an attempt was made to torch two more.

Fire Chief Joseph Santell said a cause has not been determined in the fires, but it appeared someone lit paper on the seat of the two cars in which fire did not take.

One of the cars had been towed due to damage in an accident, but Smoot said he wasn't sure if any of the cars were operational.

Santell said a state police fire marshal has been notified and might join in the investigation.
