Fire at apartment is ruled accidental

A fire that started Tuesday in an upstairs bedroom of an apartment in the Malleable Heights housing complex in Sharon has been ruled accidental.

The cause of the fire at 827 Ravine Place has not been determined, firefighters said.

Charles Newby, 18, and his 4-year-old brother were home at the time of the fire but escaped unharmed, police said. The Herald had been told incorrectly by neighbors and firefighters that no one was home, and published the information in Wednesday's story.

Firefighters were unsure how many people lived in the house but said the Mercer County Chapter of the American Red Cross had been called to help the occupants.

Holly Hogay, occupancy manager for Mercer County Housing Authority, which owns the apartment complex, said the family has been relocated to another apartment in the complex until the fire-damaged unit can be repaired.

The fire was confined to the bedroom, but the rest of the house had smoke, heat and water damage, firefighters said.

Tim Swogger, maintenance supervisor for the authority, said the damage was not bad and could be easily repaired.
