Woman convicted for role
in melee that left cops hurt

After two days of testimony and several hours of deliberation, a jury convicted Mary M. Rice, 44, of 448 Prindle St., Sharon, of rioting, resisting arrest, hindering apprehension, disorderly conduct and obstruction.

The charges stemmed from a July 2001 incident at her home.

According to testimony, police arrived to question Ms. Rice's nephew, Octavius Clark, about a hit-and-run accident that happened earlier that day.

Police testified about 30 people gathered in the yard and were shouting and yelling. Ms. Rice was part of the crowd, police said, and was shouting at them, yelling obscenities and squirting them with a garden hose.

In the melee, four Sharon policemen were injured.

Clark pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and other lesser charges.
