Kitchen grease ignited a blaze at 7:01 p.m. Saturday at 353 Brooklyn St., a rental property made up of a house and two apartments, in Sharon.

Vicki Cole, who rents the house, said she cooking on the stove and cleaning up grease in the kitchen when she left the room to make a bed.

When she came back, she said, the skillet on the stove was in flames. She put the skillet in the sink, but the flames had already spread to the countertops.

Ms. Cole and her five children got out of the house safely. No one was injured, firefighters said.

Mike Lowrey, the owner of the property, said the building is insured. The house suffered severe damage, firefighters said, and an adjoining apartment suffered smoke damage. A dollar estimate was unavailable Saturday evening.
