Keystone Research to study
feasibility of raising wage tax
Whether people who work or live in Greenville will see a wage-tax increase will depend on the results of a feasibility study.
Borough Council President Peter Longiotti, a solicitor from Douglas and Joseph law firm in Hermitage, Joe Hohman of Resource Development Management Inc. of Pittsburgh and Mercer County Common Pleas Court President Judge Francis J. Fornelli met Tuesday to discuss the possible increase.
Keystone Research Inc., Greenville, was hired to study the feasibility of a wage tax increase.
Currently the wage tax is 1 percent. Council has proposed raising that to 1.7 percent for residents and 1.5 percent for nonresidents.
The wage tax increase is part of the borough's Act 47 fiscal recovery plan. Resource Development created the plan.
Act 47 is Pennsylvania's program for financially distressed communities. The borough faces a debt of $1.2 million, a hole created by misspent bond money and financial mismanagement. Greenville applied for distressed status last February, the 18th municipality to do so.
The group will meet again at 9:15 a.m. Feb. 10.
