Students to vie in regional math

The regional tournament of the Challenge 24 math competition is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday in Kilcawley Center at Youngstown State University.

Registration is set for 8:30 a.m.

A total of 48 Mercer County students from grades 4-8 will be competing in the tournament against other students from Lawrence County in Pennsylvania and Trumbull and Mahoning counties in Ohio.

The tournament will be coordinated by Dr. Nathan P. Ritchey of Sharon, who is a professor of math at YSU.

The 48 students qualified for the tournament last October during the local Challenge 24 competition at Case Avenue Elementary School in Sharon. That event is sponsored by The Herald's Newspaper in Education program in cooperation with YSU.

"We're excited for our local students who are getting the opportunity to compete at YSU," said Mary Beth LoScalzo, The Herald's director of educational services. "It's a wonderful thing to be able to compete at a program on a college campus at their age. I'm happy for them."
