Those who shovel, plow snow into streets risk fine

Hermitage police and PennDOT are asking residents to stop plowing or shoveling snow onto the road because it is illegal.

Under the vehicle code, depositing waste on the roadway is a violation that can result in a fine of up to $300, police said.

"We are going to use it because we are getting complaints," said Deputy Chief Larry Matchak, adding that it creates a hazard and can cause accidents.

PennDOT said snow plow operators or property owners who do this can be held liable for crashes or any damage caused by their negligence.

Suggestions by PennDOT include:

» Never plow or shovel snow onto or across a public road.

» Don't create large piles of snow near a public road because it can block the visibility of passing motorists.

» When necessary, pile snow to the right of the driveway (facing the road) so as not to obstruct the view of oncoming traffic and to avoid having snow plowed back into the driveway.

» Clear an area to the left of the driveway (facing the road) to catch snow from passing snowplow trucks.

» Don't allow children to play on snow piles near the road.
