Hearing postponed for teen
accused of sexual assault
The preliminary hearing for Stephen Zolnier, the Sharon High School student accused of sexually assaulting another teenage boy last month, was postponed.
The hearing was supposed to take place Thursday afternoon before District Justice James E. McMahon, Sharon, but was continued until noon Feb. 27 at the request of Zolnier's attorney, Ronald Amrhein Jr., Sharon.
McMahon also changed Zolnier's bond to allow him out of his home as long as he is accompanied by a parent at all times. Zolnier was initially released after posting $50,000 bond on the condition that he only leave home to go to school or for the necessities of life.
Zolnier, 18, of 544 Wengler Ave., Sharon, was at the Spruce Avenue home of a 17-year-old boy Dec. 29 when the pair were wrestling with another 15-year-old Sharon boy, police said. Zolnier and the 17-year-old tied the third boy's hands and feet together, police said.
Once the teen was tied, Zolnier and the other boy "indecently assaulted" him with a glow stick, police said.
Zolnier is charged with involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, unlawful restraint, indecent assault and criminal conspiracy.
The 17-year-old was placed in a juvenile detention center and will be petitioned to Mercer County Juvenile Court on the same charges, police said.
