Unattended
lit candle
is blamed
for house fire

A fire that broke out shortly after 4 p.m. Friday at 2960 William Ave. off Birch Street in South Pymatuning Township was caused by a candle left burning unattended, said Fire Chief Nick Kolbrich.

No one was home at the time. A neighbor who arrived at her home at about 4:10 saw black smoke pouring from the house and called 911.

The neighbor, who declined to be identified, said at first she thought the smoke was coming from the clothes dryer, but it was "too ugly, too black."

Kolbrich said the home is owned by Ira Howard. The phone book lists the homeowner as Ira Frazer.

A bedroom was heavily damaged and the rest of the house had smoke and heat damage, Kolbrich said. He said the family is not able to live in the house and is staying with relatives.

The home was insured, Kolbrich said.

Sharpsville volunteer firefighters assisted South Pymatuning Township volunteer. They were on the scene for about two hours.
