Commission probing hunter shooting

Pennsylvania Game Commission is investigating the shooting of a Greenville hunter Jan. 4 during muzzleloader hunting season.

Edgar C. Warren, 68, was shot at about 11 a.m. on Flick Road, Sandy Creek Township, while he was deer hunting, said Regis Senko, PGC information and education supervisor.

He was shot in the lower abdomen. The gunshot was not self-inflicted and Senko said they have identified the shooter, but are not releasing the person's name.

Donald Chaybin, wildlife conservation officer for northern Mercer County, is investigating whether the shooting was a result of carelessness or negligence, Senko said. Charges could be filed if it is determined that those elements were present, he said.

Warren was initially treated at UPMC Horizon, Greenville, and transferred to UPMC Presbyterian, Pittsburgh, Senko said. Warren has since been released, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Another person was with Warren at the time of the shooting and was able to summon help, Senko said.

A muzzleloader is a traditional firearm that is loaded with gunpowder and a rifle ball that are placed in the barrel, Senko explained.
