Mom, daughter escape burning home

A woman and her 10-year-old daughter escaped through the front window of their New Wilmington home after it caught fire at 10:03 p.m. Thursday, firefighters said.

Susan Gerber, 215 W. Vine St., and her daughter were treated for cuts at the hospital of Jameson Health System, New Castle, said Fire Chief Rick Adams.

Ms. Gerber and her daughter were sleeping when the smoke alarm woke them. The fire, which firefighters believe was electrical, started in a back room off the kitchen, Adams said.

The kitchen and back room sustained the most damage from the fire; the rest of the house sustained smoke damage, Adams said.

Firefighters were on the scene until about 2 a.m. Friday, Adams said.

Ms. Gerber, who had insurance, and her daughter are staying with relatives, Adams said.
