Orthodox church pastor to lead youth mission

The pastor of a Hermitage church will lead a college group to Mexico to serve in a mission project during their spring break in late March.

The Rev. David Subu, pastor of Holy Cross Orthodox Church, 950 Maple Drive, will head up a Real Break outreach to Tijuana from March 22-29.

"Each year hundreds of thousands of college students take trips on their breaks from school, most often during spring break," notes the Real Break Web site, www.ocf.net/realbreak/index2.asp "Real Break provides alternatives to the 'traditional' spring break which many times can be nothing but foggy memories and empty experiences.

"Real Break also provides opportunities for spiritual growth with one-on-one interaction with a priest accompanying each group. The experience also leaves the door open to many important personal realizations."

While there, the group will serve Project Mexico, which, according to the Project Mexico Web site, www.projectmexico.org, helps build homes for the homeless while also working with St. Innocent Orphanage and Mission Church. St. Innocent, the only place in Tijuana that focuses on orphaned and abused teenage boys, will serve as the base for homebuilding trips and evangelistic outreach into neighboring communities.

Over the last three years, more than 170 Orthodox students from North America have participated in Real Break. Plans this year in addition to Mexico include outreaches to Guatemala, Puerto Rico, Greece and Raphael House in San Francisco.

Anyone wishing to contribute toward the mission may do so individually or in their own churches. Checks should be made payable to Project Mexico, in care of Rev. David Subu, Holy Cross Orthodox Church, 950 Maple Drive, Hermitage 16148. Receipts on request.
