Horse dies
after SUV runs into Amish buggy

An Amish horse was killed when a sport utility vehicle slammed into it and smashed the buggy it was pulling at 6:10 p.m. Friday in Springfield Township, state police said.

Eli Byler, 17, of New Wilmington, was driving the buggy south on Indian Path Road and did not stop at the stop sign at the intersection with Leesburg Station Road, police said. The buggy was hit by an SUV driven by Barry Cox, 24, also of New Wilmington, which was westbound on Leesburg Station Road, police said.

The SUV hit the horse and the buggy slid clockwise, hitting the right side of the SUV. The buggy broke apart, and it and the horse landed in a ditch off the north side of the road, police said. Byler and Cox were not injured. The horse died at the scene, police said.
