Solicitor studying license-fee measure

Greenville council didn't act Tuesday on a proposal to quadruple the license fee on coin-operated amusement machines, deciding instead to allow the borough's new solicitor time to go over the measure.

Several business owners and borough residents have spoken out against the measure, which would raise the fee to $200 on each machine in the borough. The fee would apply to machines such as pinball machines, arcade games, juke boxes and pool tables.

Tony Saadeh, who owns a Brookfield-based company that supplies many of the amusement machines in the borough, said his company had completed a study showing that the increase in fees would make it impractical to keep the machines in place.

"We would have to remove 75 to 80 percent of the machines," Saadeh said. "Many of the business owners depend on the extra income from these machines to pay gas bills and electric bills. It is an unfair increase."

Joe Joseph, a representative of the borough's new solicitor, Douglas & Joseph in Hermitage, said the firm recommended that the ordinance be tabled until the next meeting to give them time to go over provisions and language in the document.

Joseph also said that people with reports, studies, concerns or other information to present on the issue should attend council's work session at 6:30 p.m. March 6.
