Accord reached on police contract

Sharpsville council Wednesday approved a tentative three-year agreement with its six borough policemen.

The previous contract ended on Dec. 31. Negotiations began in October, said Councilman Tom Lally, public safety and personnel chairman.

Patrolmen will receive a $1,500 raise each year of the contract. Base salary this year is $35,855, rising to $37,355 in 2004 and $38,855 in 2005.

Clothing allowance remains at $500 a year, and police have the right to carry over $500 a year, with the maximum clothing allowance at $1,000 at any time.

Patrolmen also gained two holidays, New Year's Eve and Martin Luther King Day, bringing the total of holidays a year to 14.
