LORDSTOWN, Ohio (AP) -- General Motors Corp. has detailed plans to build a $200 million paint shop, part of a $550 million renovation of its Lordstown plant.

GM engineers met with the village zoning board and planning commission in separate meetings Monday night and received approval for the project.

Interior renovations already are under way at the assembly plant in preparation of the 2004 launch of GM's next generation of small cars.

The overall investment is aimed at making the new-car line more profitable and more flexible to model changes.

Zoning board members approved a GM request to allow the paint shop to be built with a road setback less than the village requirement of 100 feet.

After that vote, GM engineer Tom Murday appeared before the planning commission to submit a site plan. It was approved unanimously.
