Couple pleads not guilty to child abuse

A Masury couple pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges they abused their 16-year-old son.

Joseph Simpson, 43, and Theresa Simpson, 40, of 8207 Ohio St., entered the pleas in Trumbull County Eastern District Court, Brookfield. They have been charged with domestic violence and endangering a child.

Each parent faces one count of each charge; the charges are first-degree misdemeanors.

The Simpsons were arrested Monday after Brookfield police received a call about a barefoot boy running through the snow away from someone, later determined to be his father.

When police found the boy he was still shoeless and his feet were injured. Police said the boy had a fight with his parents and ran out of his home. Police also said the boy appeared as if he'd been abused and they noticed bruises all over his body, many in various stages of healing.

Police said the boy told them his parents had been abusing him for a couple of years. He is in custody of Trumbull County Children's Services.

A temporary protection order was placed against the Simpsons, who were free on bond Thursday, under the condition that they have no contact with their son.

"If you violate the conditions of the bond, you'll have to go back to jail," Judge Ronald J. Rice warned both parents. "You are to have no contact directly or indirectly with your son."
