'Thrill-kill' conviction brings life sentence

The Associated Press

A man convicted of first-degree murder for what a prosecutor called the "thrill-kill" slaying of a 12-year-old girl was sentenced to life in prison without a chance of parole.

A Lawrence County jury deliberated for about 10 minutes Monday before deciding that Perry Ricciardi II, 22, of Struthers, Ohio, should not get the death penalty for killing Shannon Leigh Kos, of Youngstown on Oct. 8, 2000.

The same jury also convicted him Friday on charges of kidnapping, unlawful restraint and criminal conspiracy. He was found innocent of abusing her corpse.

Ricciardi had no criminal record before he was arrested for Kos' murder.

The Lawrence County District Attorney's office had argued Ricciardi should be sentenced to death because of his conspiracy and kidnapping convictions.

Although the jury did not agree, District Attorney Matthew Mangino said he was satisfied with the sentence.

"He will spend the rest of his life behind bars to think about what he did on Oct. 8, 2000," Mangino said Tuesday.

Another man from Struthers, William Monday, pleaded guilty last April to first-degree murder, admitting that he slashed the girl's throat and stabbed her repeatedly. Monday also received a life sentence.
