910th sent to Germany for 1 year

The Air Force Reserve 910th Airlift Wing, which left the Youngstown Air Reserve base on Tuesday, is awaiting orders at Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany, according to the Vienna base's public affairs office.

In all, 243 members of the 910th are stationed at the German base. The exact number of reservists deploying, their mission and their destination was not released earlier in the week because of security concerns.

The primary mission of the 910th is to deliver personnel and cargo by air drop and air-land techniques anywhere in the world.

The reservists were deployed to support Operation Joint Forge, part of a NATO-led stabilization force supporting peacekeeping operations in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The 910th has been designated as the lead C-130 airlift unit supporting this operation. Before the 910th's arrival in Germany, other Air Force Reserve C-130 units were supporting Operation Joint Forge. Those units have since been reassigned. The 910th was activated to keep Operation Joint Forge continuing after the reassignment of those other units.

Meanwhile, crew assigned to the 757th Airlift Squadron, aircraft maintenance reservists from the 910th maintenance squadron and support personnel have been called to active duty. Their orders are for one year.

This is the largest activation of Air Force reservists since Operation Desert Storm.

More information about the 910th will be released next week, according to the public affairs office.
