Children's Services
absolved in death

Funeral services are being held today for a 14-year-old Burghill boy who was found dead Wednesday morning in a Trumbull County Children's Services building in Warren.

An agency staff worker discovered Kevin A. Weidershausen hanging in the closet of his room during a bed check at the Secure Care Unit, 2282 Reeves Road N.E., which houses children with emotional or behavioral problems.

Kevin was a ninth-grader at Trumbull Academy in Warren and attended Sharpsville Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was learning to play the guitar and enjoyed playing drums, art and writing music.

The Trumbull County Coroner's Office completed an autopsy at 1 p.m. Thursday and ruled the teen's death a suicide.

Detective Sgt. Dan Mason of Warren police said that after reviewing records and interviewing workers, the department found no negligence on the part of Children's Services.

He said agency workers document everything, including what time the children go into and leave their rooms.

"They followed policy," Mason said.

Children's Services Executive Director Robert A. Kubiak said Kevin never gave any indications that he was stressed or aggravated.

Kevin had a "stable day" on Tuesday and had gone along with his program and everyday routine, Kubiak said. He went to school, had a guitar lesson, did his chores and was rewarded with a shopping trip for good behavior, where he bought clothes and jewelry.

"He was proud of the clothes he bought, like a kid getting new clothes," Kubiak said, adding that Kevin later went to bed without a problem.

Kubiak, who called the situation "tragic and shocking," said children and staff members at the unit were provided counseling and sessions to help them cope. The unit has six to eight youths who live there in separate rooms, he said. They see therapists, counselors and psychiatrists regularly.

"Nothing remotely at all like this has ever happened with any child in our residence. That's why it's so shocking," Kubiak said.

The boy had been living with his grandparents, Ruby and Bill Longwell of Burghill, who raised him from infancy before he was checked into Children's Services. Wednesday, officials weren't able to locate his parents, Raymond Weidershausen III and Patricia Alexander, but Kubiak said Friday that some contact had been made.

Services are at noon in Galloway-Onstott Funeral Home, 3451 state Route 7, Hartford, with the Rev. Samuel Fitzgerald, pastor of Sharpsville Pentecostal Holiness Church, officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of Sharpsville Pentecostal Holiness Church, 240 Church St., Sharpsville 16150.
