Prayer day services set Friday

World Day of Prayer will be celebrated Friday in two Mercer County churches.

Shenango Valley Unit of Church Women United will mark the event at 11 a.m. in First Baptist Church, 301 W. State St., Sharon.

The local group is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Joan Bradley, Sharon, is president. Barbara Morrow, Sharpsville, is the World Day of Prayer chair.

Another observance will be conducted at 1 p.m. in Church of the Epiphany Episcopal, 870 Liberty St. Ext., Pine Township.

Information: (724) 794-6034.

"Holy Sprit, Fill Us" is the theme for this year's international event designed to unite men and women in more than 179 countries. It has been celebrated for more than 125 years.

World Day of Prayer women from Lebanon -- from the Catholic, Evangelical and Orthodox Christian faiths -- have jointly prepared the service.

Prayers are said throughout the day. From the first sunrise to the last sunset, prayers follow the sun's path around the globe.

An offering to support women's projects internationally and in the United States will be taken. It also will support the ongoing work of World Day of Prayer International Committee.

Church Women United is an ecumenical movement reaching 25 million Protestants, Roman Catholics, Orthodox and other Christian women.

Organized by more than 1,200 local and state units working for peace and justice in the United States and Puerto Rico, the group is a recognized United Nations' non-governmental organization.

An offering will be taken in both locations.
