For some, snow equals dough

As the snow has piled up this winter Bob Greenawalt has been a popular man among homeowners and other businesses.

Manager of Shenango Auto Body in South Pymatuning Township, Greenawalt plows snow on the side.

"This is the busiest I've ever been and I started plowing in 1982,'' he said.

With three commercial accounts and 20 homeowners to take care of, this winter he's found himself rolling out of bed at 4 a.m. to handle the load. He then heads off to his regular job four hours later.

"It gets a little tiresome getting up that early and going to work all day,'' he relates. "But I enjoy it and puts a couple bucks in my pocket.''

Due to a warm winter last year he was only called on several times by his commercial customers and doesn't recall doing any homeowners' driveways.

This year he's had to go to each home six or seven times and has lost county of what he's done for the commercial clients.

At his body shop he's also seen a little bump in business due to wrecks caused by slippery roads.

"I've seen more accidents, but there's so many body shops in this area people can go to numerous places,'' Greenawalt said.

For Erie Insurance Group the winter wonderland has caused a dent in earnings. The Erie company said it had to up reserves by about $184 million due in large part to losses racked up from recent snow storms.

Retailers were particularly hit hard on President's Day last week when the snow storm melted consumers desires to shop.

Overall, the year has been a good one at the Sears store in the Shenango Valley Mall in Hermitage.

"But President's Day -- that one hurt us,'' said John Keaty, store manager. "We were slower than normal but we had decent traffic in the store.''

While there's no such thing as make-up days in retailing, Keaty hopes the store will see good sales on its customer appreciation sale which starts on Thursday.
