Fire department makes plans for second station in Masury

Brookfield Fire Department plans to expand with a new station in the Masury area.

Plans for a second fire station are in the works for the area of state Route 82 and Addison Road, though no property has been bought, said Assistant Chief Mark Christy who presented the preliminary drawings to township trustees Monday evening.

The current station on state Route 7 will remain the bigger, main station.

Christy showed off a proposed elevation and floor plan made up by the Sharon architectural firm John N. Gruitza Associates Inc.

The proposal shows a 52-by-64-foot building that will incorporate a utility room, kitchen, day room, corridor, bunk room, bathroom and a garage area, which would house one fire truck. The station would have room for four workers should the department expand and need the extra room, though only two are expected to be on duty there.

There will also be ample room for an additional fire truck if needed.

Chief Keith Barrett said the department will look into getting a surveyor for the building and utilities. He added that Trumbull County might be able to provide a surveyor to keep costs down.

"The weather is really messing with us. We're a little behind because of the weather," Christy said. "The new trucks will be here late in the year so we need to get moving on it."

In other business, trustees followed recommendations by a fire department review group consisting of Capt. Dave Coffey and Mike Haygood and bought a 75-foot aerial ladder truck for $355,306 with deductions from Pierce Appleton Engine Rescue and an emergency rescue/fire engine for $480,857 from Seagraves Ladder.
