Drifters headline shoes for kids benefit

The Drifters, featuring Charlie Thomas, will headline the annual Shoe Our Children benefit concert Wednesday at Tiffany's, in Brookfield.

The concert raises money for the Winner Foundation's program to provide shoes to needy children. More than 19,700 pairs of shoes have been given away.

The event opens with a buffet dinner, which will be served from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Dr. William G. McDowell of Hermitage will be presented the Shenango Valley Foundation's 2003 Humanitarian Award. He will receive a plaque and $5,000 to be donated to a charity of his choice.

Brass Taxi opens the music at 8, followed by the Drifters.

Thomas, who sings lead with the group, was a member of the Drifters' 1960s incarnation, singing behind leads such as Ben E. King, Johnny Moore and Rudy West.

The group's hits at that time included "There Goes My Baby," "Save the Last Dance For Me," "Under the Boardwalk" and "Up on the Roof."

Tickets, which cost $75, will be available at the door.
