Strimbus donate 13 acres
for new township cemetery

Plans are in the works for a new cemetery in Brookfield, thanks in part to a generous donation to the township.

The Strimbu family, which owns and operates Strimbu Trucking, donated property a year ago for a new cemetery. The 13 acres are west of the township administration building.

The property, which can only be accessed through Strimbu Drive, is the site of a long-closed rest area along state Route 82.

Brookfield Cemetery encompasses about 11 acres and is getting full so the township needs more burial space, said Jaime Fredenburg, road department manager.

Monday night, Fredenburg discussed with trustees the ongoing intentions for the new cemetery. He said while no timelines are in place, arrangements are being made to have consultants look at the land and determine a possible design for the property, which also needs to be cleared of trees.

"We have to plot a course of action. We'll need to get utilities, know what kinds and where, where to put entranceways, the type of cemetery it will be, if there will be baby sections and crematory sections ...," Fredenburg said, adding that a basic design is available for trustees to view.

Since the new cemetery will benefit all township residents, Fredenburg and trustees agreed a public meeting with township organizations and residents will be part of the planning process.

"They may have ideas that we didn't think of," Fredenburg said.
