Tornado fund pays victims; tree group formed

Nearly four months after a tornado leveled part of Clark, the tornado disaster relief fund continues to grow and plans are in the works to replace lost vegetation.

At Tuesday's council meeting, Wil White, chairman of the disaster relief fund committee, announced that the fund received $88,850 as of Feb. 28. Of that, $12,100 has been disbursed and $23,371 is scheduled for disbursement next week. Disbursements range from $100 to $3,500, depending on a homeowner's claims and needs.

After the disbursements, about $53,379 will remain in the fund, White said.

Since the fund was established, 79 people have applied for money. So far, 35 have received checks. Not all applicants are from Clark and South Pymatuning Township; two are from Delaware Township and others were passing through or visiting the area the night of the tornado and suffered some sort of damage.

The fund committee's next meeting is scheduled for March 13. Committee members plan to meet every two weeks for at least another month, White said.

The money from the fund will be used only for property damage. None will be available for trees or stumps, but White said some money might be set aside for South Pymatuning Township and the newly formed tree committee in Clark to replace trees and remove stumps. Council approved the formation of the tree committee -- comprised of Greg Ursta, Ruthann Leskowak and Arthur Reagle -- on Tuesday.

Also at the meeting, Gary Micsky of Penn State Cooperative Extension in Coolspring Township, said a national 4-H tree-planting grant is available, but it has to be filed by 4-H members. Micsky said according to records, no 4-H members live in Clark, but outside groups can come in to form a committee in the borough.
