Ohio man gets yearlong jail sentence for 2001 shooting

A Warren, Ohio, man convicted in the shooting of a Sharon man Nov. 1, 2001, will be spending at least a year in jail.

Solomon "Grungy" Owens, 25, was sentenced Feb. 27 by Mercer County Common Pleas Court Judge Michael J. Wherry to 6 to 18 months in prison each on charges of simple assault and reckless endangerment.

The prison terms will be served consecutively.

Owens will be given credit for time already served in jail and is eligible for boot camp.

Owens pleaded guilty to the charges Feb. 4. Charges of aggravated assault and a firearms violations were withdrawn.

Owens was charged with firing a single shot from a .25-caliber pistol that hit Robert T. Mosley, 29, of Sharon in the abdomen at the former C. Brown's Banquet Center, 300 Roemer Blvd., Farrell, police said.

Owens was attending a birthday party, and Mosley was in the bar area, police said. Mosley took a compact disc of the rap group DMX to the dance floor side of the establishment to have it played, police said.

Consuelo Owens, Owens' sister, threw the CD on the floor, and Mosley confronted her, police said.

Owens pulled out the gun and fired a single shot, police said.

Owens was let out of a side door after the shooting, police said.

Mosley spent a day in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System.

Owens also had been charged with attempted homicide, but prosecutors said they dropped the charge because they could not prove that Owens intended to kill Mosley.

Owens was charged Nov. 15, 2001, but was not arrested until Dec. 6, 2002, as he was prosecuted in Ohio on unrelated charges. He has been in Mercer County Jail since his arrest.
