Model Kim Alexis to speak
at community health event

Former supermodel Kim Alexis will be the guest speaker when NuBridge Development, Inc., presents "Spring to Health" from 6 to 9 p.m. May 3 in Hickory High School Auditorium.

The goal of the event is to educate the community on the benefits of healthy living by providing information on diet, fitness, health screenings and key health risks.

Tickets are $12.

Besides modeling, Ms. Alexis also has actress, author and health-and-fitness expert on her resume. She has competed in seven marathons and two triathlons and ran the Los Angeles Marathon for a fashion segment for "Good Morning America."

This is the first event of this magnitude for NuBridge, which owns the Rachelle House and Clepper Manor in Sharon and Nugent's in Hermitage. Shane Nugent, vice president of NuBridge, said he hopes "Spring to Health" can become an annual event.

"We want to give something back to the community," he said. "We're helping to educate the community on the benefits of healthy living."

NuBridge has teamed up with the American Red Cross, the American Heart Association and Sharon Regional Health System for the event. A percentage of the proceeds from "Spring to Health" will go to the American Heart Association and the Red Cross, said Wendy Karlovic, risk manager and education director at NuBridge. NuBridge is looking for business sponsorships and involvement from other organizations.

"We'd like the whole community to be involved," Ms. Karlovic said. "The more people who are involved, the more successful it's going to be ... . We're seeing it as being a very positive event in the community."

The event will feature vendors and health screenings from different agencies. Dr. Maryann Payne, cardiothoracic surgeon with Sharon Regional's Heart Institute, will speak before Ms. Alexis.

"It's a very casual, informal evening, yet we will get information out and see our neighbors," Nugent said.

The event at the high school will be followed by a formal VIP reception at Rachelle House to provide an opportunity to meet Ms. Alexis.

Nugent said NuBridge's goal is to offer events like "Spring to Health" several times a year, so people in this area do not have to travel to Youngstown, Cleveland or Pittsburgh for such programs.

"We plan on this being a great event, something I'd love to see happen annually," he said.
