School 'sells' Realtors about attributes

By Erin Palko

Sharon school employees had the opportunity on Wednesday to "sell" some of the positive attributes of the district to local real estate agents during a luncheon at Case Avenue Elementary.

The purpose was to let the Realtors know what Sharon schools have to offer, so they can inform their clients.

"We understand the role you play in demonstrating the merits of school districts to clients," said Lisa Newmeyer, a third-grade teacher and member of the district's public relations committee. "We're very proud of all of our academics and programs, and we want to show you firsthand some of the things we have to brag about."

Representatives from local real estate agencies toured a "learning gallery" in the library that illustrated some of the district's educational programs, had lunch and were treated to a performance by the Tiger Kittens and Men of Note high school singing groups.

They also received school district brochures to give to their clients and gardening favors -- seeds, gloves and flowerpots -- to go with the motto "Sharon City Schools' Seeds of Learning Blooms Success Along the Way."

"We feel that we have some good-quality programs that don't always get the press that other things get in the community," said Mike Calla, director of curriculum and instruction for the district.

Case Avenue Principal William Dunsmore said that among the students present at the luncheon that day were an Eagle Scout, a National Merit finalist, a student entering the ministry and volunteers for the American Red Cross.

He also named what he felt were the district's three strongest assets: the students, the teachers and the parents.

"The parents, teachers and students are all something to be proud of," Dunsmore said.

The school has held luncheons for members of the community in the past and is planning another one for this spring, possibly with local businesses, Mrs. Newmeyer said.
