“Happy Anniversary Baby’’,
the popular 1970s song by
Little River Band, would be a
fitting theme song for the
Shenango Valley’s two up-
scale inns established by
Donna Winner and her late
husband, Jim Winner.
Tara – A Country Inn, in
Clark, celebrated its 25th an-
niversary this past June, and
Buhl Mansion Guesthouse
and Spa, in Sharon, is look-
ing forward to its 15th an-
niversary this coming New
Year’s Eve 2012.
Tara’s anniversary was cel-
ebrated with an elegant
black-tie dinner-dance. The
gala, which doubled as a
fund-raiser for the late Jim
Winner’s pet charity, “Shoe
Our Children’’, had in atten-
dance loyal overnight guests
who have stayed at the inn
every year since it opened in
1986. “Our guests are like
family to us’’, said Donna
Winner. “They return year
after year to celebrate birth-
days, anniversaries or simply
to escape from reality for a
night or two.’’
Donna Winner remains
determined to carry on her
husband’s dreams of build-
ing a strong hospitality and
tourism industry in the
Shenango Valley. Their hos-
pitality companies, including
Buhl Mansion and Tara,
have provided hundreds of
area jobs for over three
d e c a d e s .
The Win-
ners began
their ven-
tures in hos-
pitality in
1979 when they purchased
the Shenango Inn and many
loyal employees are still
working for the Winner fami-
ly nearly 33 years later.
Donna and Jim Winner re-
ceived the Bill Knecht
Tourism Award from Visit-
MercerCountyPA in June
2010, just months prior to
Jim’s passing; a timely trib-
ute to all that the couple ac-
complished to promote
tourism in Mercer County.
They were also the recipi-
ents of the Pennsylvania
Tourism and Lodging Associ-
ation’s Innkeepers of the
Year Award in 2007, and in
2008 they were handpicked
by Gov. Ed Rendell and in-
ducted into the inaugural
class of the Keystone Society
for Tourism to honor vision-
aries in destination leader-
ship and community develop-
ment.

music is once again cranking
and the servers are donning
saddle shoes and red chiffon
scarves looking as if they
just danced out of a 1950s
sock hop.
“We are extremely excited
about celebrating the one-
year anniversary of re-open-
ing Donna’s Diner on Feb.
25th. We have received
amazing support from people
of Sharon and tourists from
all over the region,’’ says
Laura Ackley, the diner’s
general manager.
“We wanted to honor Jim
Winner’s memory and take
Donna’s Diner back to his
dream of a 1950s theme. We
are serving good old fash-
ioned comfort food that he
would have
loved includ-
ing a special

Jim
bar-
beque, ba-
con cheeseburger since he
loved to barbeque on week-
ends and holidays.”
The diner has 10 varieties
of WinnerBurgers everyday
and dozens of flavors of milk-
shakes. The Rockin’ Reuben
and Winner Club sandwiches
are big sellers too.
There also are several veg-
etarian options, and our Gol-
ly Miss Molly! eat-and-run
specials are perfect for the
lunch-bunch in a hurry and
on a budget – starting at $5
including drink, tax and tip.’’
Diner guests are invited to
make a voluntary donation of
one dollar for each glass of
water, which will bring hope
to those in need. Each
month the donations will be
matched by the Winner
Foundation and a check for
the total contribution will be
sent to the “H20 for Hope’’
charity of the month.
Donna’s Diner is open for
breakfast, lunch and dinner
with its easy to remember
“slot machine hours’’ (7-7-7):
7 am to 7 pm, 7 days a week.
The diner is available for
private meetings and parties.
During warmer months Don-
na’s Diner also features out-
door riverside dining.
