MERCER and LAWRENCE COUNTIES
By Kathryn Lima
President of Faro Enterprises
and member of Lawrence Mercer
Athena International Affiliate
A premier global women’s
leadership
organization,
Athena International, is in-
creasing awareness of its
mission in the Lawrence and
Mercer County region. Join-
ing the already established
AthenaPowerLink, an adviso-
ry program for women busi-
ness owners, the newly es-
tablished Lawrence Mercer
Athena International Affiliate
is planning a year of activi-
ties around leadership.
The first event was held in
September when over 100
area women leaders – pres-
ent and future – from
Lawrence and Mercer coun-
ties gathered to network,
meet new friends, and dis-
cuss leader-
ship at the
first local cel-
ebration of
the Athena
International
Women’s Leadership Day.
The event brought togeth-
er those women who have
exhibited leadership with up-
and-coming women leaders
around the topic of leader-
ship. It also provided the op-
portunity for women from
both counties to meet and
get to know each other.
The initial local event was
hosted by a committee of
women leaders from both
counties and sponsored by
the Winner Foundation of
the Community Foundation
of Western Pennsylvania and
Eastern Ohio. Proceeds from
the event were used to es-
tablish a Women’s Fund in
the Community Foundation
for use in support of activi-
ties that advance opportuni-
ties for personal and profes-
sional growth for women in
Lawrence and Mercer coun-
ties.
The purpose of this event,
as well as other Athena In-
ternational programs, is to
shine a spotlight on women
leaders in our communities,
to mentor emerging women
leaders, and to establish a fo-
rum where women can grow
both personally and profes-
sionally.
As a result of the success
of the September event,
Athena International has se-
lected Lawrence and Mercer
Counties as the site for a
first in the nation pilot affili-
ate program.
We are excited to know
that our activities will carry
the Athena brand. “We have
a Facebook page -

national - and planning is un-
derway for more leadership
development projects. What
we accomplish here can be-
come a model for future
Athena International affiliate
programs in other communi-
ties nationwide.
The Lawrence/Mercer
Athena International Affiliate
group will host its next event
April 16. Linde Wilson, CEO
of Sharon Regional Health
System, will be the featured
speaker around the topic of
“Balance and Purpose.”
The AthenaPowerLink ini-
tiative continued to advise
women-owned businesses in
Mercer and Lawrence Coun-
ties in 2011. Since its begin-
ning in 2007, APL has pro-
vided access to expert
guidance for w
ness owners in
