Samuel A. Marks

Mercer man was longtime State Farm Insurance agent

Samuel A. Marks, 201 S. Pitt St., Mercer, passed away Saturday (3-3-01) in Florida. He was 70.

Mr. Marks was born in McKeesport, Pa.

The alumnus of Thiel College, Greenville, taught at Mercer High School. He was a 40-year agent for State Farm Insurance and an Optimist member.

Mr. Marks was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Mercer.

Surviving are: his wife, Mary Jane, to whom he was married for 49 years; and four children, Laura Marks Patton, Samuel A. Marks III, Robert James Marks and Richard G. Marks; 12 grandchildren, Tawnya Patton Moore; Samuel A. Marks IV; Jonathan Marks; Ashley Patton; and Eric, Natalie, Courtney, Gregory, Bruno, Michael and Samantha Marks; and two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Nathan Moore.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society, 19 Jefferson Ave., Sharon 16146.

June E. McGill Barron

Harrisville U.M. member was longtime beauty shop owner

Funeral will be Friday for June E. McGill Barron, 419 S. Center St., Grove City, formerly of Harrisville and Linesville. She died at 1:30 p.m. Monday (3-5-01) in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. She was 81.

Mrs. Barron was born June 23, 1919, in Linesville to Arthur B. Garwood and Laura Dennis Garwood.

She was an alumna of Linesville High School and in the 1930s was a vocalist on the Ashtabula radio station.

For more than 28 years, Mrs. Barron owned and operated the former June's Beauty Shop in Harrisville.

She was a member of Harrisville United Methodist Church; and Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 86, Grove City, for which she was a past matron.

Her first husband, Arthur H. "Andy" McGill, whom she married in October 1943, died in July 1976. Her second husband, Walter Barron, whom she married in September 1978, died March 5, 1989.

Surviving are: a son, C. Dennis McGill and his wife, Tammi McGill, Saegertown, Pa.; two stepdaughters, Diana Fredley, wife of David Fredley, Purcellville, Va.; and Kathleen Mitchell, wife of Michael Mitchell, Basking Ridge, N.J.; a stepson, James Barron, and his wife Mariam Barron, Pullman, Wash.; a sister, Mary Frances Ewing, Linesville; a brother, Richard Garwood, Grand Junction, Colo.; three grandchildren, Andy and Robbie McGill; and Ron McGill and his wife, Shannon McGill, all Saegertown; a great-grandchild; eight stepgrandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Beside her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Wilda Roxberry; two brothers, Dennis and Wendell Garwood; and one stepson, Roy Barron.

Anna M. Gelety

Carpatho-Russian church member was club officer

HOCKESSIN, Del. -- Anna M. Gelety, 17 Morning Glen Lane, Newark, Del., formerly of Second Street SE, Masury, died Tuesday (3-6-01) in St. Francis Care Center. She was 87.

Mrs. Gelety was born Nov. 16, 1913, in Mammoth, Pa., to John Urda and Mary Tomko Urda.

As a member of St. John's Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Church, Sharon, she was a past president of the Mother-Daughter Club.

A homemaker, Mrs. Gelety was a past president and treasurer of the Women's Auxiliary of the American Carpatho-Russian Citizens and Social Club, formerly of Farrell.

Her husband, Andrew Gelety, whom she married Sept. 4, 1948, died Aug. 8, 1992.

Surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Elizabeth Ann) Foley, Newark, who cared for her mother for the past 8½ years; two grandchildren, Lisa and David Foley, both Newark; and two sisters, Margaret Lewis and Helen Wanchik, both Greenville.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Mary Yalch; and five brothers, Andrew, George, Steve, Michael and Thomas Urda.

Martha E. Hoffman

Masury woman was self-employed dog groomer

Martha E. Hoffman, 1059 Bedford Road, Masury, died at 4:15 a.m. Tuesday (3-6-01) in St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown. She was 79.

Mrs. Hoffman was born Oct. 30, 1921, in Berlin, Pa., to John Sass and Ida Dormer Sass.

She was a self-employed dog groomer for 35 years.

Mrs. Hoffman was a Lutheran.

Her husband, Lawrence "Shorty" Hoffman, whom she married Sept. 14, 1937, died May 9, 1992.

Surviving are: four sons, Clifford "Skip" Hoffman, Hermitage; Doug Hoffman, Evanston, Wyoming; Larry Hoffman, Masury; and Ralph Hoffman, Sharpsville; a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Dawn L.) Hicklin, Hermitage; five brothers, Charles Sass, Jamestown; Frank and James Sass, both Cleveland; the Rev. John Sass Jr., Franklin; and Ted Sass, Miami; six sisters, Mrs. Dale (Anna) Baker, Wakeman, Ohio; Mrs. Clyde (Bertha) Glessner, Fort Ashby, W.Va.; Mrs. Jerry (Ida) Hostetler, Somerset, Pa.; Olga Krepelka, Venice, Fla.; Mrs. Al (Evelyn) Rosetti, Falconer, N.Y.; and Dolly Hutchinson, Berlin; 29 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Valerie Brooks; and a brother.

Edward L. Kulnis

WE retiree was golf, bowling leagues member, WWII vet

Edward L. Kulnis, 1415 Roemer Blvd., Farrell, died at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday (3-6-01) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after a lengthy illness. He was 83.

Mr. Kulnis was born Aug. 10, 1917, in Farrell to Konstanty and Wladyslawa Maciorowska Kulnis.

A member of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Farrell, Mr. Kulnis retired in 1979 after 43 years as a group leader at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp.

He was a sergeant in the Army and served in Europe during World War II.

Mr. Kulnis, a 1936 graduate of Farrell High School, was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5286, Farrell; and belonged to many local bowling and golf leagues.

He loved to fish and garden and was an avid reader.

Surviving are his wife, the former Irene DeCarmine, whom he married on July 11, 1959; a son, Edward Kulnis of Birmingham, Mich.; two sisters, Frances Wojnarski of Mishawaka, Ind.; and Genevieve Bayus of Hubbard.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph A. Kulnis.

Anna Marie Hemmerlin

Retiree owned business with sons in Portersville

Anna Marie Hemmerlin, Mercer Township, Butler County, died at 2:10 p.m. Tuesday (3-6-01) in United Community Hospital, Pine Township, following a brief illness. She was 87.

Mrs. Hemmerlin was born Dec. 14, 1913, in the West View area of Pittsburgh to Joseph Killian Jesteadt and Edith Burger Jesteadt.

She married Charles Andrew Hemmerlin on Sept. 17, 1933. He survives.

Mrs. Hemmerlin and her sons started Hemmerlin's Greenhouse and Produce House in Portersville in 1952, from which she retired in 1999.

She belonged to St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church in Forestville since 1960 and was a member of their Christian Mothers group.

Surviving besides her husband, at home, are: a daughter, Mrs. Leroy (Margaret A.) Pettis, Pittsburgh; three sons, Robert E., John J. and Charles W. Hemmerlin, all of Slippery Rock; two brothers, Charles Jesteadt, Pittsburgh; and Joseph, Prospect, Pa.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers; Paul, George, and Henry Jesteadt.

John 'Jack' W. McCann

Active St. Joseph church member retired from Sawhill

Funeral Mass will be Friday for John "Jack" W. McCann, 543 Wengler Ave., Sharon. He passed away at 4:55 a.m. Tuesday (3-6-01) in his home after an extended illness. He was 78.

Mr. McCann was born Jan. 6, 1923, in Sharon to John E. McCann and Mary E. Hanahan McCann.

He attended St. Joseph's parochial grade school and was a 1941 alumnus of Sharon High School. Mr. McCann attended Youngstown State University and retired in 1982 after 35 years from what is now AK Steel, Sawhill Tubular Division, Sharon, for which he was a manager in the data processing department.

An Army veteran, he served with the Corps of Engineers in Europe during World War II.

Mr. McCann was an active member and usher at St. Joseph's Church, Sharon.

He was a former member of the Sharon Zoning Commission.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Shirley R. Martz, whom he married May 15, 1948, at home; two daughters, Mrs. Matthew (Margaret "Mimi") Skiljo Jr.; and Mrs. William (Erin M.) Clepper III, both Sharon; four sons, Terrence M. McCann, Hermitage; Daniel G. McCann, Sharon; John P. "Pat" McCann, Farrell; and Timothy W. McCann, Cape Coral, Fla.; a sister, Patricia Porter, Hermitage; a brother, Thomas E. McCann, Greeneville, Tenn.; and 13 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Mary Elizabeth "Sis" Hnida.

Maitland Edwin 'Ed' Symons Jr.

'58 Lakeview grad worked for IBM in New York

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Funeral will be Saturday for Maitland Edwin "Ed" Symons Jr., Endicott, N.Y., formerly of New Vernon Township. He died Sunday (3-4-01) in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital of natural causes. He was 61.

Mr. Symons was born Nov. 21, 1939, in New Castle.

He graduated from Lakeview High School in the class of 1958. He earned a bachelor's degree in engineering from Youngstown State University; a master's degree in electrical engineering from Syracuse (N.Y.) University; and a master's in engineering sciences from the University of Vermont.

Mr. Symons had worked for 33 years in the Endicott area for IBM, where he was known for his dedication to his work.

He was a Navy veteran and a member of the Union Center (N.Y.) United Methodist Church.

Mr. Symons loved boating and spending time around the water.

He also loved to work on cars.

Mr. Symons married Gwenlyn S. States on Sept. 10, 1966, and she survives.

Also surviving are: two daughters, Christina Symons, Oakmont, Pa.; and Debra Symons, Lockwood, N.Y.; two sons, Douglas and Robert Symons, both Endicott; one grandson, Michael A. Cary II; two brothers, John Ferguson, Chester, Va.; and Jerry Ferguson, Baden, Pa.; two sisters, Roberta Sue Smith, San Diego, Calif.; and April McLaughlin, Baltimore; and eight nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Katherine Fletcher Symons Kelly; his grandparents, Mrs. and Mrs. William Henry Fletcher; and Mr. and Mrs. Maitland A. Symons; and a special uncle, Robert Ray of Sandy Lake.

Raymond 'Pete' L. McDonald

A Sharpsville grad, Air Force vet served in Korea, Vietnam

Funeral will be Thursday for Raymond "Pete" L. McDonald, 7 Lake Road, Mercer. He died at 10:55 p.m. Monday (3-5-01) in UPMC Horizon, Farrell, after a brief illness. He was 72.

Mr. McDonald was born Jan. 16, 1929, in Sharpsville to Raymond J. McDonald and Verde McMillin McDonald.

He was an alumnus of Sharpsville High School.

An Air Force veteran, Mr. McDonald served 20 years, achieving a rank of staff sergeant and participating in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts.

He was a Methodist and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6404; and American Legion Post 162, both Sharpsville.

Mr. McDonald was an avid reader.

Surviving are: three nieces, Patricia McDonald, Sally Slattery and Colleen McDonald; a nephew, Robert J. McDonald Jr.; a great-niece, Kathrine "Katie" Slattery; and a great-nephew, William "Billy" Slattery III.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Robert J. McDonald Sr.

Jack Chantemerle (Merle)

Rembrandt Studio owner was Free and Accepted Mason

A private funeral service will be held Thursday morning for Jack Chantemerle (Merle), 61 Stone Ridge Blvd., Hermitage. He passed away early Monday morning (3-5-01) in his home following an extended illness. He was 75.

Mr. Chantemerle was born Oct. 2, 1925, in Pittsburgh to Lawrence B. and Leontine Pujol Chantemerle.

He was educated at Connelly Vocational High School in Pittsburgh. Later he graduated from the Baltimore Institute for Photograqphy in 1947. Mr. Chantemerle worked as a photographer in the Pittsburgh area until 1952 and moved to Sharon, where he worked for Rembrandt Studio. In 1955, he purchased the studio and in 1974 bought the Mart Building in downtown Sharon to expand his business by adding a professional color lab and camera shop. In 1981, the business and building were destroyed by fire.

In the late 1950s, Mr. Chantemerle also owned and operated the former Jack Merle's Club Oasis in Conneaut Lake.

In 1982, he formed Par Five Inc. with four golfing partners. The company owned and operated 12 one-hour photo stores in North and South Carolina. Mr. Chantemerle later became a partner with Sharon Photo and Pitt Photo, placing more stores in Sharon and Pittsburgh. The chain was sold in the early 1990s.

During World War II, he served with the Navy as a signalman in Alaska and in the Pacific.

A Mason, Mr. Chantemerle was a member of Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 668, Sharon, for which he was a past master; the Blue Lodge; and Scottish Rite's New Castle Consistory.

He was a past member of Hermitage Rotary Club; and Sharon Country Club.

Mr. Chantemerle married the former Phyllis C. Booher on April 10, 1958, and she survives at home.

Also surviving are: a stepdaughter, Mrs. Robert (Cheryl) Vadala, Sharon; a stepson, William Booher, Polk; two sisters, Alice Gary, Palm Beach, Fla.; and Jeanette Stout, Atlanta; three grandchildren, Gina and Robert Vadala, both Sharon; and Ronald Vadala, Waldorf, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
