Earl W. Baker, Jr.
Recent Salem Tube retiree was in Croatian club

Earl W. Baker, Jr., 336 S. Keel Ridge Road, Hermitage, died at 12:15 a.m. Saturday (11-3-01) in UPMC Horizon, Farrell. He was 65.

He was born May 14, 1936 in Greenville to Earl W. and Mary Harakal Baker.

Mr. Baker was a 1954 graduate of Greenville High School and served in the Army.

He was employed as mill operator for Salem Tube Inc., Reynolds, until retiring this year.

Mr. Baker was a member of New Virginia United Methodist Church, Hermitage, where he was also a trustee of the church.

He was a member of the Croatian Fraternal Union Lodge 126, Farrell, and was part trustee in the Croatian American Civic Club.

Mr. Baker enjoyed wood working.

Surviving are: his wife, at home, Helen Lazich Kropp, whom he married in 1972; five daughters, Mrs. Nicholas (Sharyn) Kolbrich, Sharpsville; Ms. Brenda Kimpan, West Middlesex; Mrs. Allen (Laura) Bayuk, Midlothian, Va.; Mrs. Dennis (Liana) Redmond, Hermitage; and Mrs. Michael (Heidi) Lazzari, Forest Hill, Md.; three sons, Earl W. Baker III, Masury; Anthony Kropp and George Kropp, both Coral Springs, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. Ralph (Mary) Libbey, Greenville; Mrs. John (Jennie) Mielcarek, Transfer; and 15 grandchildren as well as one grandchild on the way.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Retired Hickory school coach/teacher loved outdoors

John J. Corll, 649 North Hermitage Road, Hermitage, died at 1:50 a.m. Saturday (11-03-01) in his residence. He was 73.

He was born Nov. 22, 1927 in Sandy Lake to Harry and Bess Osborne Corll.

A 1944 alumnus of Sandy Lake High School, he graduated with a bachelor of science degree from Slippery Rock University.

A veteran of World War II, Mr. Corll served in the Army as a military policeman with the Occupational Forces in Japan as a master sergeant.

Before retirement in 1990, he was employed by the Hermitage School District as a history and physical education teacher at Hickory High School and Hermitage Middle School for 35 years. Mr. Corll was the former football coach of Hickory High School and was the former basketball coach for Hermitage Middle School.

He attended Hickory United Methodist Church, Hermitage.

Mr. Corll was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing and playing golf at the Greenville Country Club, where he was a member. He was also a member of the National Educational Association, Pennsylvania State Retired Teachers Association and the Mercer County Teachers Association.

Surviving are: two sons, Clark E. Corll, Hermitage; and John J. Corll, New Orleans, La.; two daughters, Connie B. Corll, New Orleans, La.; and Gretchen A. Corll, Reynolds; two brothers, Harry "Skip" Corll, Ft. Myers, Fla.; and Robert Corll, Grove City; and two sisters, Phyllis Chishom, Greenville; and Shirley Bauwin, Dayton, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Constance Ruth Miller Corll, who died in 1973; and his parents.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mercer County Unit of the American Cancer Society, 19 Jefferson Avenue, Sharon 16146.

Jesse N. Fedor

Slippery Rock man was retired teacher, Navy veteran

Jesse N. Fedor, of Harmony Road, Slippery Rock, died at 10:00 a.m. Saturday (11-03-01) in his residence following a lingering illness. He was 76.

He was born Feb. 16, 1925 in Turtle Creek, Pa. to Michael and Helen Kersten Fedor.

Mr. Fedor was a 1943 graduate of Braddock High School, attending Louisiana University and graduating in 1950 from Indiana University.

A veteran of the Navy, he served in World War II.

He was employed by the Slippery Rock Area School District for 24 years before retiring in 1988. He was previously employed for 12 years in Ashtabula, Ohio as an elementary school teacher.

Mr. Fedor attended the Open Door Baptist Church, Eau Claire, Pa.

Surviving are: his wife at home, Janis M. Hemphill Fedor, whom he married April 16, 1952; three daughters, Mrs. Jerry (Elaine L.) Peoples and Mrs. Tom (Amy B.) Forest, both of Slippery Rock; Mrs. Mike (Naomi L.) Miller, Harrisville; one son, Shawn M. Fedor and his wife Faith, Slippery Rock; three sisters, Mrs. Arthur (Helen) Mozeik, Rankin, Pa.; Myrtle Fedor, Swissvale, Pa.; Mrs. Jim (Nancy) Marquez, Turtle Creek, Pa.; one brother, F. Andrew Fedor, Ben Avon, Pa.; 17 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Lionel Kirby

Lackawannock man served in Korean War, owned business

Lionel Kirby, 7266 West Market Street, Lackawannock Township, died at 4:30 p.m. Friday (11-02-01) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System following a brief illness. He was 73.

He was born Feb. 18, 1928, in Mercer, to Lionel and Anna McKee Kirby.

Mr. Kirby attended Mercer High School.

He was in the Merchant Marines until he was drafted into the Army. He was stationed in Germany during the Korean War.

Mr. Kirby was employed by the former Strasbaugh Motor Company in Youngstown as a salesman. In 1970, he owned Kirby's Mobile Home Sales of Leechburg, Pa. until he retired in 1994.

He enjoyed making model airplanes.

Surviving are: his wife, June "Meme" Slease Kirby, whom he married Oct. 7, 1950, at home; one daughter, Mrs. Paul (Shirley) Richards, Lackawannock Township; four brothers, Thomas Kirby, Mercer; James Kirby, West Middlesex; Richard Kirby, Transfer; and Laverne Kirby, of Virginia; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, James Sonntag; one brother, Gerald Kirby; and one grandchild.
