Today's obituaries John Joseph 'Jun Jun' Combine Sharpsville man was retired Shenango Inc. foreman John Joseph "Jun Jun" Combine, 33 N. 12th St., Sharpsville, died at 12:02 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, in his residence after a three-year illness. He was 75. Mr. Combine was born April 6, 1927, in Sharpsville to Francesco Combine and Rosa Pagliaroli Combine. He retired in 1989 from the former Shenango Inc. in Sharpsville as a foreman, after 45 years of service. Mr. Combine was a member of St. Bartholomew's Church in Sharpsville and Shenango Inc. Retirees. A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II and belonged to American Legion Post 162; and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6404, both Sharpsville. Mr. Combine was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. He always helped everyone. A gardener and mechanic, he liked to repair things in his garage. Mr. Combine was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers, Pirates and Penguins fan. His wife, the former Margaret Tomko, whom he married July 8, 1950, died Aug. 8, 2000. Surviving are: two daughters, Roseanne Jackal, Hermitage; and Marcia Combine and her husband Glenn Siminick, Sharpsville; one son, John J. Combine Jr. and his wife Antonetta, Hermitage; three grandchildren, Yvonne DelFratte, Brian Jackal and John S. Combine; two great-grandchildren, Anthony and Aubrey DelFratte; three sisters, Minnie Marcella, Farrell; Anne Smith and her husband Walter, Sharpsville; and Mary Combine, Hermitage; and one brother, Patsy Combine, Hermitage. He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Joseph Combine; a sister, Rose Combine; and a brother, Angelo Combine. COMBINE Marcia Cline Nelson '74 Hickory High grad was physician's assistant in Fla. CITRUS SPRINGS, Fla. -- Marcia Cline Nelson, 2205 W. Gardenia Place, Citrus Springs, formerly of Hermitage, died on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, in her home. She was 46. Mrs. Nelson was born Aug. 10, 1956, in Sharon, a daughter of Joseph Cline Jr. and Margaret Hinkson Cline. She was an alumna of Hickory High School Class of 1974 in Hermitage, and was employed as a physician's assistant in Marion and Citrus counties in Florida. Surviving are: one daughter, Gabrielle Barnes, Dunellon, Fla.; one son, John Kish, Ocala, Fla.; her father; her mother, Margaret Tatusko; and her stepfather, Peter Tatusko, all Hermitage; one sister, Mrs. Frank (Catherine) Costello, Sharpsville; one brother, Joseph F. Cline, Siler City, N.C.; and a granddaughter, Alexis Cranston, Dunnellon. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday (11-7-02) in Dunnellon, with the Rev. Stanley Stewart of North Oak Baptist Church, Citrus Springs, officiating. A cremation followed. A local memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday (11-15-02) in Hickory United Methodist Church, Hermitage, with the Rev. G.H. Trumbo Jr., pastor, officiating. Virginia 'Ginny' Pierce Sharon native was retired school bus driver in Fla. SUN CITY CENTER, Fla. -- Virginia "Ginny" Pierce, Brandon, passed away at 10:40 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, in Hospice House. She was 77. Mrs. Pierce was born July 27, 1925, a daughter of Harvey Burton Swartz and Alice Chisholm Swartz. Mrs. Pierce was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Harold Pierce. A native of Sharon, she moved to the Florida area in 1959. After 18 years as a school bus driver, Mrs. Pierce retired from the Hillsborough County School District in Florida. Survivors include: two sons, Rick Pierce and his wife Linda, Bushnell, Fla.; and Jeff Pierce and his wife Vicki, Charlotte, N.C.; a daughter, Diana and her husband David Beeson, Riverview, Fla.; a brother, Wally Swartz and his wife Jane, Sunrise Beach, Mo.; three granddaughters, Kim and her husband Jimmy Fowler; Debbie and her husband Billy Britt; and Tina Pierce; and one great-grandson, Zack Fowler. Memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. Pierce's name through the funeral home to LifePath Hospice, 3010 W. Azeele St., Tampa, Fla. 33609.

James V. Burns Sr. Pymatuning Twp. man was B&LE Railroad retiree James V. Burns Sr., Speir's Mobile Home Park, Pymatuning Township, died at 5:32 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Greenville. He was 66. Mr. Burns was born Feb. 8, 1936, in Greenville to Ralph L. Burns and Anna Mae Knajz Burns. A graduate of New Castle School of Trades, he retired in 1997 as an engineer from Bessemer & Lake Erie Railroad in Greenville after 31 years. Jim was a former member of Hillside Presbyterian Church in Greenville and belonged to Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 276; and American Legion Post 140, both Greenville; and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7599, Reynolds. He enjoyed NASCAR racing and eating his five-hour Alfredo. Jim had a zest for life and loved everyone he met. He served as a cook in the U.S. Marine Corps. Surviving are: a daughter, Marnie Stanley, Transfer; three sons, James V. Burns Jr., Transfer; LeRoy Burns, Greenville; and Jeffrey Burns, also Transfer; a brother, Charles B. Burns, Jamestown; and five grandchildren. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; and his first wife, Helen M. Ramsey Burns.
BURNS Shirley M. Foy Longwell Bair Sharon homemaker offered care at John XXIII Home Shirley M. Foy Longwell Bair, 1061 French St. Extension, Sharon, died unexpectedly at 4:33 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Farrell. She was 70. Mrs. Bair was born Nov. 28, 1931, in Sharon to Lyle Foy and Bessie Smith Foy. A 1950 graduate of Sharon High School, Mrs. Bair had been employed by J.C. Penney Co. in Hermitage and was a "caresitter" for many years at John XXIII Home in Hermitage for Martha Dailey, a former school teacher in Sharon School District. Frequently Shirley would also caresit other senior citizens. Mrs. Bair was also previously employed by the former W.T. Grant Co. in Hickory Plaza and the former Rexall Drug Co., Farrell. She and her husband, Gordon E. Bair, whom she married Feb. 7, 1970, were the owners and operators for five years of the former Diamond Cafe in downtown Sharon, prior to the redevelopment of Sharon City Centre. She loved flowers, attending to many plants on her front porch and in her yard. She had a passion for beautifying her home, particularly with her many handcrafted quilts, and loved decorating in her home for holidays. As a homemaker, she cheerfully did chores in her home and loved being with her children and grandchildren. She also liked caring for pets, especially her two cats and a dog. She loved listening to music, working crossword puzzles and crocheting. She and her husband traveled thousands of miles across the United States, touring numerous sites. She was a member of AARP, Shenango Valley Chapter 3616, a retired person's organization; and the American Legion Auxiliary. She also belonged to Oakland Avenue United Methodist Church, Sharon. Her husband, Gordon, survives at home. She also leaves: two daughters, Mrs. Bob (Debbie) Taylor, Farrell; and Mrs. Chip (Cindy) Zagorski, Hubbard; a son, Gary W. Longwell, Sharon; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Larry (Laura) Rudge, Mercer; 11 grandchildren, Pauline and Gary Longwell; Matthew and Bonnie Zagorski; Jason and Brian Bray; Debbie Sees, Jennifer Miscall, Christina Scott; and Sarah and Mary Rudge; and three great-grandchildren, Alexa Sees, Kalie Miscall and Christopher Longwell. Her first husband, Samuel Ward Longwell, whom she married in 1951, died in 1967. Besides her first husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a stepdaughter, Mary Ann Bair Bray; a brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Jean Foy; and an aunt, Maude Roberts.

MORRIS Theodore 'Ted' Bialko Theodore "Ted" Bialko, Cordia Commons at the Shenango Inn, Sharon, formerly of 2006 Stafford St., Farrell, died at 10 a.m. Sunday (11-10-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System from complications of a stroke. He was 80. Obituary information was incomplete.
BIALKO George Edward Horstman Sr. Sharon Steel retiree, vet was fire police member George Edward Horstman Sr., 422 Blacktown Road, Pine Township, died at 12:45 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, in Orchard Manor, Pine Township. He was 72. Mr. Horstman was born Oct. 29, 1929, in Herman, Butler County, to Clements Horstman and Regina Birkbigler Horstman. He retired in 1986 from the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant, where he worked on the track gang for 38 years. Mr. Horstman attended Center Presbyterian Church in Grove City. A U.S. Army veteran, he served during the Korean conflict. He was a member of the Mercer County Fire Police, a life member of the Springfield Township Fire Department and was honored as a member of the Pennsylvania State Fire Police Association, serving Springfield Township for more than 25 years. His wife, the former Anna Belle Christy, whom he married June 11, 1955, died May 20, 1991. Surviving are: two children, Margaret C. Horstman, Lynchburg, Va.; and George E. Horstman Jr., Mercer; two sisters, Leato Horstman, Mercer; and Velma Perdian, wife of Alfonce, Hermitage; a nephew, Howard "Ronald" Horstman, Mercer; and several other nephews and nieces. HORSTMAN Sara Blanche Freeman Retired educator formerly lived in Grove City FRANKLIN -- Sara Blanche Freeman, Franklin, formerly of Grove City, died at 9:03 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, in The Caring Place after a brief illness. She was 94. Mrs. Freeman was born March 29, 1908, in Irwin Township, Venango County, to Fred Hovis and Lottie Baker Hovis. A graduate of Grove City High School Class of 1925, she was an alumna of what was Slippery Rock State Normal School and attended Grove City College. Mrs. Freeman retired in 1958 from Valley Grove School in Sugar Creek Borough and formerly taught in Reno Elementary School. She later retired in 1976 from St. Lawrence Catholic School in Miami, Fla., where she was a principal for 15 years. As a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Grove City, Mrs. Freeman belonged to the Tru Gold Sunday school class; and the United Methodist Women. She also belonged to National Retired Teachers Association and Pennsylvania Retired Teachers Association. Her first husband, Kenneth Gilmore, whom she married May 26, 1930, died July 3, 1936. Her second husband, John R. Freeman, whom she married July 7, 1952, died May 3, 1968. Surviving are: two stepchildren, Richard Freeman, Jacksonville, Fla.; and Geraldine McCarthy, Franklin; a brother Paul Hovis, Grove City; and 11 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Besides her first and second husbands, Mrs. Freeman was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Almeda Grace and Fern Gadsby; and four brothers, Dean, Claude, Ernest and Leroy Hovis. FREEMAN Albert Herman Pokrant Jr. Grove City Bus Lines retiree was Navy veteran Albert Herman Pokrant Jr., Flower Avenue, Grove City, passed away at 7:50 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, in his residence after an extended illness. He was 63. Mr. Pokrant was born Aug. 19, 1939, in Braddock, Pa., a son of Albert Herman Pokrant Sr. and Emma Jane Stough Pokrant. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and retired from Grove City Bus Lines. Mr. Pokrant attended Church of the Nazarene in Grove City. Surviving are: his wife, Ella Jane Allen Pokrant, at the residence in Grove City, whom he married May 7, 1963; two sons, Richard William Pokrant and George Andrew Pokrant, both Grove City; his mother, also Grove City; a brother, Richard Pokrant, Pittsburgh; and six grandchildren. POKRANT Richard 'Dick' M. Shiveley Former Dayton, Ohio, man served in Army and Navy A funeral service will be held Wednesday for Richard "Dick" M. Shiveley of 542 Twitmeyer Ave., Hermitage, formerly of Dayton, Ohio. He passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, Nov. 10, 2002, in his home following a brief illness. He was 67. Mr. Shiveley was born Dec. 9, 1935, in Dayton, a son of Frank G. and Lola Eubanks Shiveley. He graduated from the Patterson Co-Op High School in the Dayton area and served with the U.S. Naval Reserves while in high school, as well as briefly after graduation. Mr. Shiveley was employed by the City of Dayton as a police officer for several years. Later in life, he moved to New Orleans, where he worked for Gearhart's, an oil exploration company, on the company oil rigs. While living in Louisiana, Mr. Shiveley was educated in electronic sand computer science and worked for Debold, a security corporation. As his knowledge of computers and electronics grew, it became his passion. After relocating to his home state of Ohio, he worked for Project Cure as a drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselor. In the 1960s, Mr. Shiveley also served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Fort Bragg with the 82nd Airborne Division, where he was a paratrooper. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Grace A. McIntire, whom he married in 1957; and by his second wife, Peggy Chain, who passed away in 1997. He is survived by: his two daughters, Cynthia A. Gebhart and her husband Dr. James Gebhart, Hermitage; and Sherry L. Shiveley Beatty and her husband Jason, South Salem, Ohio; two sons, Terry L. and Kirk A. Shiveley, both Poplarville, Miss.; one stepson, Kevin J. Kmett, Wilmington, Ohio; and one stepdaughter, Lynn Amann and her husband Vince, Dayton. Mr. Shiveley also leaves: his mother, Hermitage; and one brother, Frank G. Shiveley and his wife Sandy, Brentwood, Tenn.; six grandchildren, Christopher and Brenden Gebhart; Chandra and Landen Berwanger; and Christin and Ashley Amann. He leaves: three nephews, Eric Shiveley; Steve Harnish and his wife Mary Beth; and Scott Shiveley and his wife Shaun; one niece, Kristie Shiveley; and one great-niece, Jackie Harnish.
SHIVELEY Dorothea E. Allison '58 Sharon High grad was receptionist-secretary Dorothea E. Allison, 1126 Greenfield Road, Hermitage, passed away at 2:05 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, in her residence in Hermitage. She was 62. Mrs. Allison was born Feb. 23, 1940, in Sharon to Joseph Burns and Dorothy Keating Burns. A graduate of Sharon High School Class of 1958, she was employed for 15 years as a receptionist and secretary by ABI Orthotic and Prosthetic Laboratory in Sharon. Mrs. Allison was a member of a local card club. Her husband, David B. Allison, whom he married June 5, 1959, survives at home. Also surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Larry (Kathleen) Eckard, Mercer; a son, Michael Todd Allison, West Middlesex; her mother, Dorothy Burns Morocco, Hermitage; a sister, Mrs. Richard (Patricia) Lordo, Hermitage; four nieces and nephews, Richard Lordo and his wife Lori; Lisa Yanak and her husband Tim; Scott Lordo and his wife Jeanette; and Jennifer Black and her husband Dan; and seven grandnieces and -nephews, Tyler and Nicholle Yanak; Caitlin and Sean Lordo; Zachery Lordo and Sabrina and Autumn Black.
