Today's obituaries Howard W. Anderson Sr. Sharon Steel worker, truck driver was WM youth coach Howard W. Anderson Sr., 2292 Mercer-West Middlesex Road, Lackawannock Township, died at 8:35 a.m. Wednesday (9-13-00) in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, following a stroke. He was 66. Mr. Anderson was born Jan. 5, 1934, in Greenfield to Fred and Frances Fobes Anderson. He was reared by his father and stepmother, Frieda Seiple Anderson. An alumnus of TDDS truck driving school, Ravenna, Ohio, he was a driver for 5½ years for Babcock Lumber Co.’s Hubbard yard. Mr. Anderson was previously employed for 41 years at the former Sharon Steel Corp.’s Farrell plant, where he was a railroad engineer. He was a member of Lebanon Presbyterian Church, Lackawannock Township; and the former United Steelworkers of America. A Marine Corps veteran, Mr. Anderson served during the Korean conflict and was a member of American Legion Post 160, Farrell. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a coach for Little League baseball and midget football in the West Middlesex area. Surviving are: his wife, the former Judith K. Thompson, whom he married Dec. 14, 1956; a daughter, Mrs. Jeffrey (Lisa) Mild, Lackawannock Township; three sons, Wayne Jr., Carlisle, Pa.; David L., West Middlesex; and Robert T., Roaring Springs, Pa.; two sisters, Wanda Thompkins, Ohio; and Mary Wallace Heckathorne, Russellville, Ky.; a brother, Edward, Hermitage; five grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grand-children. ANDERSON Frederick ‘Fred’ E. Crawford Active Mason was retired WE supervisor at Reynolds Frederick "Fred" E. Crawford, 7904 Adamsville Road, West Fallowfield Township, Crawford County, died at 1:53 p.m. Wednesday (9-13-00) at home following an extended illness. He was 73. Mr. Crawford was born May 1, 1927, in Greenville to Henry and Beatrice Pressler Crawford. He attended the former Penn High School in Greenville. Mr. Crawford retired in 1985 after 37½ years from the former Westinghouse Electric Corp.’s Reynolds plant, where he was a supervisor. An Army veteran, he served in Europe during World War II. Mr. Crawford was a member of Adamsville Presbyterian Church. An active Mason, he was a member of Free and Accepted Masons Adelphia Lodge 424, James-town; Scottish Rite’s New Castle Consistory; Zem Zem Temple of the Shrine, Erie; and Crawford County Shrine Club. He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. Surviving are: his wife, the former Nancy R. McLenahan, whom he married Nov. 7, 1947; a son, Frederick E. Jr., Fairview, Pa.; two daughters, Mrs. Ronald (Sherry) Resele, Hartstown; and Mrs. Paul (Marilyn) Sommers, Adamsville; a sister, Catherine Cooper, Greenville; a brother, Joseph, Hermitage; six grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. CRAWFORD Lyle G. ‘Huff’ Huffman Retiree was Navy veteran, Howland, Vienna fire official Lyle G. "Huff" Huffman, 803 Youngstown Kingsville Road, Vienna, died at 2:35 a.m. Tuesday (9-12-00) at home following an extended illness. He was 69. Mr. Huffman was born June 7, 1931, in Vienna to Henry J. and Alice L. Mackey Huffman. An alumnus of what is now Mathews High School, Vienna, he retired in 1989 after 21 years from Howland Fire Department, for which he was a captain. Mr. Huffman had an extensive employment record including Viets Motors and H.L. Scott Oil, both Vienna; Hertz Transportation, Youngstown, 16 years; several local cement contractors; and Vienna Fire Department, for which he served five years as fire chief and was a 27-year volunteer. A Navy veteran, he served during the Korean conflict. The Ohio State fire instructor was coordinator of Trumbull County Fire School; "240 Hour" Recruit Class; and Sharon Speedway fire crew for 25 years. Mr. Huffman was also fire instructor for Northeastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania. He was a member for 52 years of Vienna Presbyterian Church. Mr. Huffman was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3521, Vienna; and Amvets Post 290, both Vienna. Surviving are: his wife, the former Beverly J. Emerine, whom he married March 8, 1986; two sons, Kevin S., Niles Ohio; and Rick S., Duluth, Ga.; two stepsons, Mike Lambert, Kinsman; and Tim Lambert, Niles; his mother, Vienna; and six grandchildren. Angie Kaylor Angie Kaylor, 4½ N. Front St., Apartment 2, Greenville, died today (9-14-00) in UPMC Horizon, Greenville, following an extended illness. She was 47. Obituary information was incomplete.
Michael Mudrey Ex-Sharon businessman was head of Clark police, council Cremains will be scattered off the coast of the Virgin Islands for Michael Mudrey, 80 Milton St., Clark. He died at 10:42 p.m. Tuesday (9-12-00) in UPMC Horizon, Farrell. He was 81. Mr. Mudrey was born April 11, 1919, in Sharon to John and Pearl Jugan Mudrey. He attended Patagonia schools and retired in 1994 after 27 years as owner of Pennsylvania Auto Body, Budd Street, Sharon. A Navy veteran, Mr. Mudrey was a member of the original crew of the John R. Pierce destroyer during World War II. He served in the Atlantic and Pacific and was known as the vessel’s "Plank Owner." He was a former police chief for the borough of Clark; president of the Clark borough council; and Republican committeeman for Mercer County. Mr. Mudrey was a member of Faith Presbyterian Church, Hermitage. The active Mason was a lifelong member of Free and Accepted Masons Shenango Lodge 668, Sharon, where he served as past worshipful master. He belonged to Mercer County Shrine Club, Hermitage; Scottish Rites New Castle Consistory; Zem Zem Temple of the Shrine, Erie, for which he played in the Zem Zem Oriental Shrine Band; and was a knight commander of Mount Calvary Commandry 67, Knight’s Templar, Greenville. Mr. Mudrey also belonged to Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 1637, Mercer; Old Faithful Club, Hartford; and was a charter member of Clark Volunteer Fire Department. His first wife, the former Marjorie P. Ellis, whom he married April 8, 1941, died April 1, 1980. Surviving are: his second wife, the former Esta K. McClure, whom he married in 1983; two daughters, Susan Holben, Sharon; and Marcy Zmijewski, Atlanta; two sons, Michael J.T., Clearwater, Fla.; and Robert Timothy Giffin, Virginia Beach, Va.; a stepdaughter, Laurie Bush; and a stepson, William McClure, both Clark; a sister, Helen Rapp McDonald, Brookfield; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Joseph; and two sisters, Mary Mudrey Anderson and Annie Mudrey Seech. PHILLIPS Charles Semenick Ex-Pittsburgh area building contractor lived in Lake Twp. Charles Semenick, 211 Lake Hill Road, Lake Township, formerly of McDonald, Pa., died at 3:40 p.m. Wednesday (9-13-00) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System following a brief illness. He was 72. Mr. Semenick was born Dec. 6, 1927, in Weirton, W.Va., to Charles and Caroline Kawenski Semenick. In his earlier years in Washington County, Pa., he was a partner in Palace Builders Co. Mr. Semenick was later a self-employed building contractor for many years in Washington and Allegheny counties. He semi-retired in 1992. An Army veteran, he served during World War II. Mr. Semenick was a Protestant. He enjoyed working with crafts and doing jigsaw puzzles. He was a pilot, a photographer and an animal lover. He also enjoyed writing poetry and was a published poet in the National Library of Poetry. Surviving are: his wife, the former Rose Bence, at home; three daughters, Sharon, McDonald; Mrs. Frank (Karen) Shinshasky, Canonsburg, Pa.; and Mrs. Chuck (Charlotte "Tina") Huchko, Bulgar, Pa.; two sons, Gary, Tower, Minn.; and Richard, Longwood, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Donald M. (Karen) Greggs, Sandy Lake; and Mrs. Ted (Kelly) Ingram, Sanford, Fla.; a stepson, Kirby Bence, Greenville; a sister, Frances, Orlando, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard.
SEMENICK Joan Stewart Ex-Greenville homemaker was 1st Presbyterian member Funeral will be Friday for Joan Stewart, 359 Meek St., Sharon, formerly of 148 Columbia Ave., Greenville. She died at 12:25 a.m. Wednesday (9-13-00) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 75. Mrs. Stewart was born Aug. 15, 1925, in Birmingham, England, to Leonard and Ellen Mary Flood Walker. A homemaker, she was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Greenville. During World War II, Mrs. Stewart volunteered overseas for the Red Cross. She enjoyed watching classic movies and the TV show "ER," and listening to songs by Frank Sinatra. Her husband, John Franklin Stewart, whom she married Sept. 28, 1946, died Aug. 3, 1998. Surviving are: a daughter, Carol Thompson; and her mother, both Sharon; a granddaughter; and two great-granddaughters.
STEWART James Robert Young Former English teacher, Marine was published author James Robert Young, Grove City, died at 6:10 p.m. Sunday (9-10-00) in Grove Manor, Grove City, after being ill since the fall of 1999. He was 58. Mr. Young was born Oct. 4, 1941, in Butler County to Robert J. and Beaulah M. Sasse Young. A 1959 alumnus of Butler High School, he graduated in 1968 from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania and earned a master’s degree from the Greensboro campus of the University of North Carolina. Mr. Young served with the Marines during the Vietnam era. The former high school and college English teacher was a writer and published books, especially poetry. Mr. Young was a member of Church of the Beloved Disciple, Grove City. Surviving are: two sons, Shamus T., Boston; and Patrick E., Prospect, Pa.; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
