Betty Riddle Imbrie Obituary was published 12-11-01 Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service set for 11 a.m. Saturday (4-20-02) in First United Methodist Church, Sharpsville, with the Rev. Lee Weber, pastor, officiating. Additional information was given to The Herald. Gregory W. Curry Gregory W. Curry, 260 S. Buhl Farm Drive, formerly of Mercer Avenue, both Hermitage, passed away Saturday (4-14-02) in John XXIII Home, Hermitage. He was 84. Obituary information was incomplete.
CURRY Daniel Harrison Lott Pine Twp. man worked for A.K. Steel in Butler Daniel Harrison Lott, 33, of 553 Daugherty Road, Pine Township, was found dead at 10:40 a.m. Friday (4-12-02) on state Route 8, Brady Township, Butler County, after an automobile accident. He was 33. Mr. Lott was born Dec. 28, 1968, in Grove City to Harry O. and Sandra K. Breese Lott. A 1987 graduate of Slippery Rock High School, Mr. Lott was employed for three years at A.K. Steel Co. of Butler where he was an operator in the silicon division. He attended Scotch Hill Presbyterian Church, Wolf Creek Township. Mr. Lott had interests in the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pirates and Penguins, NASCAR, motorcycles, playing golf, hunting and fishing. Surviving are: a daughter, Clarissa Lynn Lott, Eau Claire, Pa.; his former wife, Cindy Lynn Timco-Lott, Eau Claire, Pa.; his parents; two grandmothers, Edith Breese, Grove City, and Kathryn J. Lott, Harrisville; and a brother, Jesse O. Lott, Grove City. He was preceded in death by two grandfathers, John Breese and William Lott, and an uncle, Robert Breese.
LOTT Paul Gardner Beard Navy veteran was 40-year craneman at Sharon Steel Paul Gardner Beard, 200 Wick Ave., Hermitage, formerly of Brookwood Drive, Brookfield, passed away Friday (4-12-02) at UPMC Horizon, Farrell, after a short illness. He was 86. Mr. Beard was born May 19, 1915, in Brookfield to Mervin and Anna Gardner Beard. He was an alumnus of Sharon High School. He worked as a craneman for 40 years at the former Sharon Steel Corp's Farrell plant where he retired Jan. 21, 1977. He was also a member of the AFL-CIO United Steelworkers Union #1197. As an active member of Central Christian Church in Hermitage, Mr. Beard served as a deacon and was a Sunday school teacher. Mr. Beard served with the United States Navy during World War II. Surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Brian (Joan Ann) Johnson, with whom he lived; a granddaughter, Mrs. John (Lisa Jo) Jones, West Middlesex; four great-grandchildren, Candyce Mary, Jennifer Ann, William Paul Doerr and Joshua A. Jones; a sister, Dorothy Jackson, Hermitage; and a brother, Mervin E. Beard, Jr., Hermitage. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Mary A. Jackman, whom he married Oct. 15, 1940, and who passed away March 26, 2002; and a sister, Cetores Joy. Memorial contributions may be made to Central Christian Church, 218 Meadowbrook Road, Hermitage.
BEARD Elizabeth A. "Little Betty" Chavka Sharon woman was one of first local USO hostesses Elizabeth A. "Little Betty" Chavka, 1027 Myrtle Place, Sharon, died at 9:50 p.m. Friday (4-12-02) at the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System following an extended illness. She was 86. Mrs. Chavka was born Jan. 29, 1916, in Farrell to George and Catherine Sonoga Halula. She was employed at Ideal Bakery in Farrell as a cake decorator. Mrs. Chavka was a member of St. Ann's Church, Farrell; was president and vice president of the parents and teachers organization at St. Ann's School and was a volunteer for the American Heart Association. She was also one of the first U.S.O. hostesses at the former Camp Reynolds. She loved playing bingo, doing needle point and crocheting, cooking, and she loved her family. On July 1, 1944, she married Anthony J. Chavka, who died Aug. 31, 1981. Surviving are: a daughter, Constance M. Hunter and her husband David S., Sharon; two sisters, Anna Halula, Farrell, and Mrs. Helen (Michael) Yevchak, Sharon; three grandchildren, Mrs. Lindsey (Tahme) Campbell, Corey Hunter and his wife Christy, and Krista Hunter; two great-grandchildren, Jeffery Addicott and Hannah Addicott. Besides her husband, Mrs. Chavka was preceded in death by three brothers, George Halula, Frank Halula and Ronald Halula; a sister, Mary Frances McMasters; and an infant daughter, Patricia Anne Chavka.
CHAVKA Ruth C. Bennington Geiwitz Jefferson Twp. woman was member of grange, church Ruth C. Bennington Geiwitz, 1003 South Lake Road, Jefferson Township, died Saturday (4-13-02) in Countryside Convalescent Home, East Lackawannock Township, following a brief illness. She was 89. Mrs. Geiwitz was born Jan. 5, 1913 in Ontario, Canada, to James and Elizabeth Pearse Bennington. A graduate of Mercer High School, Mrs. Geiwitz was retired from G.C. Murphy in Mercer where she worked as a clerk. She was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church, a member of the Jefferson Grange, the Mercer Homemakers and the quilting group at Bethany Presbyterian. Surviving are: a daughter, Beverly Albretsen, Mercer; four grandchildren, Vicky Lynn Somerfield, Richard Martin Geiwitz, David Wayne Sowers and Kevin William Sowers; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William F. Geiwitz who died Aug. 1, 1990; her parents; a son, Richard Carl Geiwitz; three brothers, George, Jim and Joe Bennington; and five sisters, Jean Mariacher, Winifred Calvin, Annie Sines, Mary Lawrence and Nellie Evans.
GEIWITZ Fred P. Higgins Navy vet was maintenance foreman at Westinghouse Fred P. Higgins, 1330 Kimberly Road, Sharon, died at 2:40 p.m. Friday (4-12-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System from cancer. He was 84. Mr. Higgins was born Aug. 20, 1917 in West Middlesex to Frederick M. and Alice J. (Phillips) Higgins. He was a 1935 graduate of West Middlesex High School. After working for Westinghouse Corp., Mr. Higgins enlisted in the Navy in December 1941 and served in both theaters of World War II. He served on the Jessie Rutherford, a destroyed escort ship, in the Pacific. After the war he returned to Westinghouse where he eventually became foreman of maintenance. He retired in 1978. After retiring, Mr. Higgins spent most of his time in Virginia and Florida. He was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons and enjoyed fishing, camping, boating and the outdoors. Surviving are: two sons, Michael Higgins and his wife Michele, Newark, Ohio, and Chris Higgins and his wife Kathy, Sharon; a sister, Mrs. Robert (Alice Jane) Hopkins, West Middlesex; a grandson, Philip Higgins, Newark, Ohio; a granddaughter, Holly Higgins, Iona Ind.; and a great-granddaughter, Gabriella Gray. Mr. Higgins was preceded in death by his former wife, Anna F. Higgins, and his parents. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mercer County Chapter of the American Cancer Society.
HIGGINS Warren Robinson Warren Robinson, 445 Columbia St., Sharon, died at 9:30 a.m. Saturday (4-13-02) at UPMC Horizon, Farrell. He was 74. Obituary information was incomplete.
