Alfred G. Mitchell Sharon man was mail carrier, Purple Heart winner A funeral service will be held Monday for Alfred G. Mitchell, 340 Malleable St., Sharon. He passed away at 2:21 p.m. Thursday (8-15-02) in his home. He was 69. Mr. Mitchell was born Oct. 27, 1932, in Jacksonville, Fla., to Arthur O. Mitchell and Ella Mae Ford Mitchell. He attended Jacksonville schools and West Virginia College. Mr. Mitchell retired in 1984 after 32 years as a mail carrier for U.S. Postal Service. He was a member of Ruth African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Sharon and a former member of New Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Jacksonville. Mr. Mitchell also belonged to Twin City Elks Lodge 187 in Farrell; and Veterans of Foreign Wars New Murray-Bell Post 7597, for which he served as a former trustee, also Farrell. A U.S. Air Force veteran, he served during the Korean conflict as a radio operator and a navigator, earning a Purple Heart. His wife, the former Edna M. Dessaw, whom he married on June 6, 1959, at home. Also surviving are: one daughter, Leslie A. Mitchell, Hermitage; his mother, Ella Mae Mitchell, Jacksonville; three grandchildren, Ericka Mitchell, Briana Harrison and Timothy Harrison, all Hermitage; one sister, Verona M. Mitchell, Jacksonville; three brothers, Marvin C. Mitchell; Chauncey G. Mitchell and his wife Dorothy; and Dr. Orrin D. Mitchell and his wife Patricia; two nieces, Tanya Mitchell and Dr. Kia Mitchell; and a nephew, Derrick Mitchell, all Jacksonville; and several cousins, in-laws and friends. Mr. Mitchell was preceded in death by his father; and one sister, Angela E. Mitchell.
MITCHELL Alfredo Ferrante Sharon man was tailor at men's stores Alfredo Ferrante of 729 McClure Ave., Sharon, died of natural causes at 12:04 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, in his residence after an extended illness. He was 77. He was the husband of Marie "Mary" Marrow Ferrante. Born on Monday, Dec. 15, 1924, in Castledesangro, Italy, Mr. Ferrante was a son of the late John and Elvira Coliccho Ferrante. He came to the United States from Italy in 1956. He had worked as a tailor at the former Cappy's Men's Store in Hermitage. Alfredo also had worked at the former Shontz & Myers and Sam Lurie men's stores, both in Sharon. Mr. Ferrante was of the Catholic faith. In addition to his wife, he is survived by: three grandsons, Richard Grande Jr., Sharon; and Frank Grande and Tony Grande, both Erie; two brothers, Louige Ferrante and Fugio Ferrante, both Castledesangro; and four great-grandchildren.
FERRANTE Eugene Burke Herman State College engineer had family in Sharon STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Eugene Burke Herman, State College, died Thursday morning, Aug. 15, 2002, in his home in Brookline Village, a retirement community. He was 79. Born April 5, 1923, in Sewickley, Pa., Mr. Herman was a son of the late Burke I. and Mildred Bame Herman. On Aug. 13, 1949, he married Lydia Hueston, who preceded him in death on July 3, 2000. Mr. Herman earned a bachelor of science and masters of science degrees in Physics from Pennsylvania State University. He also earned his professional engineer license. An Army veteran, he served in the Signal Corps during World War II and was employed as an engineer with HRB Singer in State College for 33 years. Mr. Herman was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in State College, where he served on church council; on various committees; and taught Sunday school. He was a longtime member of the State College Kiwanis Club and Penn State Alumni Association. Mr. Herman served on the State College Area School Board during the early 1960s. He is survived by: a son, the Rev. Dr. Richard H. Herman and his wife Lissa H. Herman, Sharon; a daughter, Ellen H. Campbell and her husband James F. Campbell, State College; grandchildren, Matthew J. Campbell; and Robert B. and Teresa S. Campbell, all State College; Barbara Campbell Thomas and Christopher M. Thomas, Bellefonte, Pa.; and Elisabeth R. Herman, Sharon; and a brother, Charles B. Herman, Radnor, Pa. Memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 263 E. State St., Sharon 16146; or to Young Life Penn-Ohio, Box 1108, Hermitage 16148.
HERMAN William J. Lewis Jr. Greenville man was WE retiree, sportsman, gardener William J. Lewis Jr., 33 Bentley Ave., Greenville, died at 2:20 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, in White-Cliff Nursing Home, Hempfield Township. He was 76. Mr. Lewis was born Jan. 26, 1926, in Greenville, a son of William J. Lewis Sr. and Frances Irwin Lewis. Although he attended Greenville area schools, his high school graduation was interrupted due to his enlistment date for the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Lewis served in the military as an Aviation Boatswain Mate Third Class on the U.S.S. Ranger in the Pacific theater of operations. He retired as a coil winder in 1985 with 35 years of service with Sharon-Reynolds-Transfer Division of Westinghouse Corp. He was a member of Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge 145; and the Italian Home Club, both Greenville. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid fisherman, hunter and gardener. Mr. Lewis was recently honored by a presentation of his high school diploma from Greenville High School. Surviving are: his wife, the former Hazel McCoy, whom he married July 4, 1947; one daughter, Lori F. McKnight; and one grandson, Sean Lewis McKnight, both Hermitage; and one brother, James H. Lewis, Canonsburg, Pa. He was preceded in death by his parents.
LEWIS Alice Mae Shannon Former Farrell homemaker belonged to Valley Baptist A funeral service will be held Tuesday for Alice Mae Shannon of 275 Sterling Ave., Apartment B 101, Sharon, formerly of 508 Wallis Ave. in Farrell. She passed away at 4:32 a.m. Thursday (8-15-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 85. Mrs. Shannon was born Jan. 23, 1917, in Cheraw, S.C., a daughter of Samuel B. Lee and Elizabeth Cutner Lee. She lived in the Shenango Valley since 1937. During World War II, Mrs. Shannon worked at General American Transportation Corp.'s former Masury plant. She was a member of Valley Baptist Church in Farrell. A homemaker, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Surviving are: her husband, Jeff Shannon, at home; one son, Wilbert L. Shannon and his wife Bernice L. Shannon, Wheatland; three grandchildren, Mavis C. Shannon, wife of Timothy Odem, Sharon; Wilbert L. Shannon Jr., Farrell; and Morgan L. Shannon and his wife Sherri, North Charleston, S.C.; three great-grandchildren, Arthur, Brittni and Teresa; two great-great-grandsons, Arthur J. and Noah C.; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. Mrs. Shannon was preceded in death by her parents; and several sisters and brothers.
SHANNON Evelyn June Huselton Shawgo Former Grove City woman belonged to Alliance Church FLOWERMOUND, Texas -- Evelyn June Huselton Shawgo, Flowermound, Texas, formerly of Grove City, died at 12:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, in Cross Timbers Care Center, Flowermound, following a lengthy illness. She was 86. Mrs. Shawgo was born Sept. 3, 1915, in Butler to Arthur Samuel Huselton and Eulalia Mae Allen Huselton. A homemaker, she was a member of Grove City Alliance Church, Pine Township. Her husband, George Gerald Shawgo, whom she married Jan. 6, 1937, died Dec. 3, 1989. Surviving are: two daughters, Mrs. Ernest (Judith E.) Lewis, Wilmington, N.C.; and Carol Graham, Highland, Texas; five grandchildren, Stacy Graham; and David Graham and his wife Stephanie, Texas; Sean Lewis and his wife Stephanie; and Mark Lewis, both North Carolina; and Susan Wilson and her husband Steven, Maryland; one great-grandson, Christian Lewis, North Carolina; and two sisters, Pearl Wheeler Lang , Butler; and Shirley Reingrover, Ontario, Calif. Besides her husband, Mrs. Shawgo was preceded in death by her parents.
SHAWGO John M. Steele Westinghouse retiree was in Battle of the Bulge John M. Steele, 1061 Woodland Place, Sharon, died Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, in his residence. He was 83. Mr. Steele was born Sept. 16, 1918, in West Decater, Pa., to John E. Steele and Myra Hoover Steele. He retired in 1979 after 40 years as a machine operator at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. An Army veteran, he served in the Air Corps in Southern France and Italy and participated in Battle of the Bulge during World War II. He was a member of American Legion Post 299 in Sharon. His wife, the former Norma Jackson Steele, whom he married on Dec. 28, 1943, died Nov. 8, 1991. Surviving are; one son, Harry E. Steele and his wife Sarah L. Steele, Hermitage; one granddaughter, Mrs. Craig (Tammy) Welch, also Hermitage; one great-granddaughter, Chyenne Welch; and one sister, Mrs. John (Reba) Hicks, Lakeland, Fla. Besides his wife, Mr. Steele was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Joseph and William Steele.

TOTH John J. Yesko Sr. Sharon Steel retiree played in polka bands John J. Yesko Sr., 305 New Castle Ave., Sharon, died unexpectedly at 10:33 a.m. Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, in the emergency room of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 77. Mr. Yesko was born June 14, 1925, in Sharon to Michael A. Yesko and Isabel Becks Yesko. He attended Sharon area schools and worked as a tinner for the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant for 38 years, retiring in 1983. He was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Sharon. A U.S. Army Air Force veteran, he served during World War II and was active in various veterans organizations. He was a member and past junior vice commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5286, Farrell; and a life member of Post 1338, Sharon; past welfare officer for Catholic War Veterans Post 1446; and belonged to American Legion Post 299, both in Sharon, for which he served as a past executive board member. He was also a past president of the Sharon Steel Retirees organization and served as a volunteer since 1985 for the F.H. Buhl Club, both Sharon. He also belonged to the National Rifle Association. A life member of American Federation of Musicians in New Castle, he played in several polka bands including the Rhythmairs, and later formed his own band, Johnny Yesko and the Tempos, for which he was the band leader. He played a stand up bass. He enjoyed photography, music, organ and piano playing and traveling. Most of all, he enjoyed being with his family and grandchildren. Surviving are: his wife, the former Mary Harkulich, at home, whom he married Sept. 16, 1950; one daughter, Mrs. Don (Donna M.) Ramsey, Hermitage; three sons, John J. "Butch" Yesko Jr. and his fiancee, Kathy Vitello, Hermitage; Rick A. Yesko, Farrell; and Robert S. Yesko and his fiance, Jennifer Mealy, Sharpsville; two sisters, Mary A. Ference, Sharon; and Helen Prosser, Sharpsville; two brothers, Edward J. Yesko, Mercer; and Joseph Yesko, Glendale, Calif.; six grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Michael J. Yesko.
